Simplicity in melody
Jazbaa (T Series)

The ability of Jagjit Singh to pick up ghazals which are simplicity personified is remarkable. His singing style brings out the essence of those magnificent shairs admirably. Here the finest example of that uncluttered poetry and singing is Mujhe tumse mohabbat ho gayee hai, ye duniya khoobsurat ho gayee hai. What an edifice he builds on this platform.

The two-disc album has a few old ghazals and a few new ones. Together they make a remarkable collection. Watch out particularly for celebrated ones like Bashir Badr’s Jis din se chala hoon, kabhi mur kar nahin dekha. Great poetry, matching music and Jagjit Singh’s voice. What more can one ask for.

As it normally happens, the most moving are the songs sung blue. Teri berukhi,In ashqon ko paani kehna bhool nahin naadani hai, tan man mein jo aag laga de, ye to aisa paani hai, Woh nahin mila to malal kya, jo guzar gaya so guzar gaya with its Arabic beat, and Dard kaisa bhi ho are the most poignant ones. The same is true of Raat aankhon mein dhali, palkon pe jugnu aaye. The feelings expressed in all these are gossamer thin.

Mai and Meena are an integral part of Urdu poetry. All the helplessness of a sharabi comes through in Kitni pee, kaise kati raat mujhe hosh nahin, raat ke saath gayee baat, mujhe hosh nahin. Utha surahi ye sheeshe–o-jaam le saaki is also in the same mould.

The title of the song Tere aane ki jab khabar mehke has been wrongly mentioned as Tere aane ki khabar jab mehke.

The Punjabi touch is provided through Jara bach ke mod ton. One ghazal which is lightweight in this otherwise brilliant collection is Yeh jo ghar angan hai.

Tashan (YRF Music)

Things are changing at Yash Raj Films. Instead of the sweet and conventional music that their offerings were known for, they have now come up with hip and modern stuff. There cannot be a better example of this transformation than their song Dil dance mare ( Sunidhi Chauhan, Sukhwinder Singh, Udit Narayan). It is insane, funny and guaranteed to be popular.

The Tashan theme is flogged good and proper with a few dialogues by Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Akshay Kumar and Anil Kapoor being presented as songs, respectively, as Pooja, Jimmy, Bachchan Pandey and Bhaiya ji ka Tashan.

Music director duo Vishal-Shekhar is less funky in other songs. Falak tak (Udit Narayan and Mahalaxmi Iyer) is rather sweet, while Dil haara has Sukhwinder Singh in full flow. Chhaliya chhaliya is average. With Sunidhi Chauhan is Piyush Mishra. All songs have been penned by non-regular writers like Piyush Mishra, Anvita Dutt Guptan, Vishal and Piyush Mishra. — ASC
