January 2003, in the North Atlantic: Captain Rakkola is in serious trouble as the engine on his cargo ship is dead. The captain and his crew of 15 are trapped on the treacherous seas more than 450 km from the nearest port. A cyclone is working its way up and heading straight for the ship. Ocean Emergency on March 31 at 10 pm on National Geographic Channel shows how a rescue mission led by Major Gilbert sets out to find the doomed ship. The team is trained to deal with the most difficult and dangerous rescues in the North Atlantic. Yet this mission will put the nerves and skills of these seasoned veterans to the ultimate test. The Cormorant is a state-of-the-art machine but it can’t get to the ship and back without a fuel stop somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The stormy weather coupled with the added weight of the rescued passengers, is pushing the Cormorant to the limit. Gilbert continues the rescue, despite the risk. The evacuation of all 16 sailors is completed with minutes to spare just as darkness falls. Now the pilots have to fly home with a heavy load and dwindling fuel in treacherous, icy conditions. Thirteen hours after the ship’s engine died, the Cormorant finally lands back to safety. Squadron 103 has completed a harrowing`B7 mission, and Captain Rakkola and his entire crew are alive to tell the tale. — NF
