Ban on players unfair: Tofeeq
Mandeep Puri
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, March 17
Tofeeq Umer, former member of the Pakistan Cricket team, feels that to ban a player from playing is against the player’s fundamental rights. Tofeeq, who is a member of Lahore Badshahs, believes that cricket is inherited in a player. “Cricket is in our blood.

Those who had imposed a ban on the players have either not played the game ever or don’t understand the feeling of a cricket. The passion that a player has for the game can’t be expressed in words”.

“To fight against the ban, the players were ready to go to any extent. However, I don’t really think the ban will last too long. We are professionals, whether it is a league or an international match, we look forward to play in the true spirit of the game.”

Tofeeq appreciates the steps taken by the Indian Cricket board and the ICL. “In any international match, the team faces the challenge of 11 players, but in these leagues there is a blend of players from every country. Moreover, these leagues are a good learning experience for young players who rub their shoulders with experienced players.”

According to Tofeeq, the cancellation of the Australian tour will have a negative effect on Pakistan cricket. “The young Pakistan squad would have learnt a lot from this tour. The issue of the security is a matter of concern of the Pakistani Government and also for PCB.”

Tofeeq believes that biding players during the auction of the IPL is a good concept. “There is nothing wrong about the action. Even the English Premier League (EPL), adopts this. To evaluate a particular player is always a good sign.”

Volvo comes to city
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, March 17
Tapping the Punjabis’ obsession for luxury cars and their deep pockets, most of the luxury car makers are now setting shop in the city. The latest to come to the city is Volvo Cars, which opened its dealership in the city today.

Daimler Chrysler, BMW, Audi, have all set up their dealerships in the city. It is not just the local denizens, but also the cash rich Haryanvis and the ‘car obsessed’ Punjabis who can now take their pick from amongst the best cars in the world. Even as the cities in Punjab and north Haryana barely have the road infrastructure for allowing these cars to run smoothly, it has hardly desisted people from possessing them.

Last year, Daimler Chrysler reportedly sold around 175 cars in the region. BMW, which opened its dealership in April last year, has already sold over 200 units. Volvo Cars plans to sell at least 100 cars in this region in a year, which is one fifth of their total sales targets for the country.

In fact, Chandigarh is the second city where they have opened their dealership after Delhi.

Considering the market size here, the company will open its Mumbai dealership after inaugurating the dealership in the city. “We can cater to both the states of Punjab and Haryana from the city. In fact, this is an important market for us as it has a huge potential for selling luxury cars. We are confident that the opening of our dealership will become a significant part of this dynamic market. As the sales pick up here, we would be looking at Ludhiana and Amritsar to open new dealerships in the region,” says Paul de Voijs, managing director, Volvo Cars.

Those in the trade say that other than businessmen, a number of professionals and agriculturists are opting for the luxury cars. Sachit Passi, partner of Krishna Automobiles, the dealers for BMW car, says, “Though a majority of clients is still businessmen, but self employed professional and big landlords from Punjab are also form a sizeable number of clients.” Given the fact that the base model of the car is priced at Rs 27 lakh and the top end model at Rs 1.50 crore, Passi says that all the models are selling equally in the region.
