A sparkling new look

If you are wearing an off-shoulder dress, you can apply shimmer on the curve of the shoulder, says Dolly Sagar

Shimmer and glitter in the make-up are back with a bang. Every fashion-conscious young girl out there is vying to get it perfectly right. Turn around and you find that shimmer cannot go unnoticed. The giggling group of girls in your favourite fast food joint make sure that you notice it. They lower their eyelids and you can catch a trace of it. They smile directly at you and it hits you right in the eye. They raise their hands to beckon the waiter and you can notice it. It is all about the new range of shimmer that has bombarded the teen fashion market lately.

Today, the cosmetics scene has undergone a sea change with shimmer and glitter ruling the roost. Youngsters know exactly what they want and how they want it to look. But remember shimmer and glitter are not the same. The shiny particles in shimmer are tiny. Glitter has more chunky pieces and flakes. Shimmer gives you a more translucent effect.

The particles have prisms in them, as a result of which the light falling on an area with shimmer gets refracted and diffused. Skin appears smooth and flaws are hidden. But glitter is pigment-based and opaque and light is allowed to reflect. So the effect is not the same.

Earlier glitter was a low-quality option but now you get glitter and shimmer in a variety of qualities and price ranges. And because they hide wrinkles, shimmer is even being used in some foundations today.

Shimmer is subtle. It has a frost feel and you can use more of it. Glitter and shimmer are both available in different forms but gels and glosses are really popular right now.

Shimmer is easier to apply but for a strong sparkle effect, glitter needs to be mixed with an oil-based cream so that it sticks. Shimmer on the lids, collarbone, shoulder and navel looks appealing. People with chiselled features can wear it anywhere, and beauticians recommend shimmer on the cheekbones. If you are wearing a dress that leaves a shoulder bare, a bit of shimmer on the curve of the shoulder highlights it nicely. In fact just use it on any part of the body you want to be highlighted. For glitter it is recommended using it on the body and even with your lipstick.

Fashion divas advise that the nose looks too prominent when shimmer is applied. People with oily skin tend to powder their nose with it and the overall effect just looks too shiny. Shimmer is used at places where light is reflected, which means on your features as the cheekbones, brow bones and temples. This would give that much desired sun-kissed look without actually being at the beach.

You can get a softer, radiant effect by dusting shimmer powder, where light hits your face. The tops of the cheeks, forehead, tip of the chin and tip of the nose, places where sunlight normally hits, could use a touch of shimmer powder for that ethereal radiance.

Peaches and pinks are universal colours. They suit all skin tones. But some beauticians prefer copper red, gold, silver and even blue that looks great on warm skin tones. Generally peach is a safe colour since it brightens a sallow complexion. You can also use silver highlights for the evening.

You could also pick up pigments (coloured powders) to mix with your moisturiser/lipstick/lip gloss to add a dash of colour and shimmer on your face. For evening wear, a light shimmer eye shadow, eyeliner and kajal and a glossy lip colour can make you look glamorous.

For night slick on a shimmery eyeliner in a deep or bright colour. Use a strong eyeliner and line the upper lash line, thickening the line and winging out at the outer edge of each eye for a dramatic finish.

Younger women in their twenties and early thirties will look amazing in shimmer make-up. If you are young, you can go all out with your make-up colors. Use the most vibrant metallics you can find as you can get away with them. Older women have to be careful. Shimmer highlights your features and wrinkles. So if you have crow’s feet, avoid metallic eye make-up. If you have lines on your face, avoid shimmer powder where the lines are. — MF
