Indian Publishing Business process outsourcing has bright prospects as it is expected to register 35 per cent growth per annum,a recent survey by Confederation of Indian Industry’s southern regional office has said. The survey also estimated that the publishing BPO industry would become a $1.46 billion industry if the current trend continued till 2010. A leading publishing BPO industry group’s CEO Sriram Subramanya of Integral Software Services, Puducherry, the brain behind the survey, said Chennai had become the hub for global publishing outsourcing BPO services as the metrolpolis had a great talent pool, journalistic skills and delivery quality standards. He said more foreign companies were interested in acquisition of Indian publishing BPOs as they could come out with books and periodicals on schedule. The publishing industry in the western countries, which once thrived because of the cost advantage, was suffering from high cost of production, including wages. With advent of digital printing, the cost of printing books had also become costlier, due to high cost of paper and machinery. Computer literacy among Indians, ability to adapt to pressing needs and their speed besides English speaking culture in major metropolitan cities were advantages for the publishing outsourcing growth. This advantage should be used properly to India becoming a world leader in publishing industry, he said. The issues concerning the industry were discussed at a seminar recently, in which leading personalities in the printing industry like K Venugopal, joint editor of the Hindu Business line, Guruvinder Batra, Senior Vice President, Publishing. Aptara International Private Limited, among others, participated. — PTI
