ICL gears up for
extravaganza
Panchkula, March 6 Shariq Patel, senior vice-president, operations, ICL, said besides on-field action, full entertainment would be provided during the matches. “Talks are on with many Bollywood and TV actors but we are waiting for their confirmation”, said Shariq, maintaining that there will be no repetition and new faces will perform. The league is once again gearing up for another 30-day cricket festival starting from March 9. The officials at stadium are working hard to complete the pending works within time. The stadium is being given a new look. Moreover, an electronic score board is coming up. Even, the construction of a bigger capacity media centre is at full swing. With new faces in every team, the third edition is expected to be more exciting, believes Kiran More, who is working hard on the ground in laying the new pitches. Kiran More said, “ ICL have created a bar and given rise to Indian Premier League. We are working hard on improving the ground condition. Now, even the players are being valued”. The ICL T20 tournament will be a cricket carnival. “Besides cricket buffs, we are targeting city residents who prefer enjoying evenings outside their homes. A festive atmosphere wills pervade the stadium before the starting of the matches. An entertainment stage will be set up where local artistes will enthrall the spectators. Stalls for food and fun games will also be set up,” said Shariq Patel. |
Oz must abandon Pak tour, says Gillespie

“Certainly, security is a big issue for any cricketer. One can’t overlook the security threats in Pakistan. In my viewpoint, the team should not visit the country unless the conditions become normal there”, said Gillespie, who arrived today afternoon here to participate in the third edition of the Indian Premier League. Gillespie would represent newly formed ‘Ahmedabad Rockets’ team in the league. Praising the show put up by ‘Men in Blue’ at Australia in the recently concluded CB Series, Gillespie said the young guns played a big role in the win. “Winning the series is a big achievement and all credits go to the hard work put in by the young members of the team. The team played better and outclassed the champions”, said Gillespie, who had claimed 259 wickets with an average of 26.13 in test matches. In 97 ODIs, he had snared 142 wickets with an average of 25.42. Looking forward at his ICL venture, Gillespie said, “I come here to play good cricket. Besides, I would love to help young players by sharing my experience as well as providing tips to them.” |
Dalbir Sahi clinches above-65 title
Chandigarh, March 6 Gurbrinder Johl trailed by three strokes to finish runner-up in the event. In the overall contest for the gross Grewal Salver, Dimple Minocha continued to lead returning a 16-over par card for a two-day tally of 173. Just one stroke behind was the lady course captain Pauline J.M. Singh. Pauline returned the best card of the day, a 15 over par 87, that included a birdie on the par 3 eighth hole. The final day tomorrow should see a tough competition between the two ladies who play with a handicap of 12 and 11. Fourteen-year-old Jaipreet S. Ghuman was seven strokes behind her mother Pauline. Bogeys continued to be the order of the day. But, there were three birdies. Shooting them were Pauline (sixth hole), Sheena Sekhon (14th hole) and Kuljit Suri (third hole). Jaipreet continued to lead in the overall net scores and in the 13-24-handicap group. Babbles Singh was leading the gross scores in the 25-36-handicap group with Neelu Chopra leading the net scores in two categories. Aussies’ day out in 3-wheeler
Chandigarh, March 6 The former Australian fast bowler Gillespie and former opener Elliot hired an auto-rickshaw to go from Hotel Taj GVK, where they have been put up for the forthcoming ICL edition, to a coffee house at Sector 11, here this evening. “Chandigarh is a beautiful city. We saw this unique mode of transportation and decided to get a first-hand travel experience. In spite of the rickety vehicle, we had fun taking a short ride,” said the cricketers, who met each other after a long gap today. The Aussies would seen in action against the local outfit Chandigarh Lions during the third edition of Indian Cricket League, starting from March 9 at Tau Devi Lal Cricket Stadium in Panchkula. Interestingly, as no other visitors at the coffee house realised that it was fast bowler Gillespie, who was once the nemesis to many world-class batsmen including Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar, sipping coffee at the table next to them, the two cricketers had no intrusion into their privacy. “Despite our tight schedule, we do get a little time for relaxation. Since we now know that we can have our privacy here, we will be exploring the city and its nearby areas during the days to come,” said Elliot. |
Patient rush goes up at GMCH
Chandigarh, March 6 Data from the GMCH, Sector 32, shows that the hospital has reported a sharp increase in patients reporting for OPD and emergency treatment. On the emergency treatment front, the hospital scored well and received 5,146 patients in January 2007 as against 4,747 patients in January 2008. Similarly, a total number of patients in February 2008 was reported at 4,899 from the previous year’s figure of 4,375. Prof Raj Bahadur, GMCH, director-principal, said OPDs visits and revisits and emergency attendance were important parameters of judging a hospital’s efficiency. The data indicated that the GMCH was decreasing the load on the PGI with support of the administration, he said. |
In-laws arrested in suicide case
Chandigarh, March 6 Sources in the police said the accused, Sham Lal and Nirmal, were arrested on the charges of dowry death and abetment to suicide on a complaint lodged by Rupa’s father Ram Murthi. Rupa’s husband was not named in the complaint. Meanwhile, with regard to the suicide of Manoj who shot himself at his Sector 23 house yesterday, the police said his brothers-in-law Jaspal Singh and Shamsher Singh came to the city today and did not lodge any complaint against anyone. The police said investigating officials spoke to Pooja, whom Manoj called before shooting himself. She admitted that she talked to Manoj and they had a heated argument. About the suicide of Shalini of Sector 37, the police said her parents also did not lodge any complaint and the body was handed over to the family after a postmortem. |

Toddler killed in accident
Chandigarh, March 6 The victim was in the lap of her mother Gudia(23), who was riding pillion on a bicycle with her husband, when the mishap took place. The girl succumbed to her head injuries at the ESI hospital in the Industrial Area. A police official at the Sector 31 police station said the parents of the victim had been admitted to the GMCH, Sector 32. According to an eyewitness, the couple was pushed under the vehicle and had to be dragged out. Tirath Ram, driver of the jeep, has been arrested and a case registered. |

14 vehicles recovered from two UP men
Chandigarh, March 6 In charge of the crime branch, inspector Prem Chand, said Jagan Nath and Krishan, both residents of Muzafarnagar, were arrested by the Panchkula Police. The accused were in their mid-20s and used to come from UP to steal vehicles. They would keep the stolen vehicles at a lime stone factory in Zirakpur. The police said 11 cases of vehicle theft had been solved with the arrest of the accused. Investigating officials expect more cases of vehicle theft to be solved during interrogation of the accused. |

Chandigarh, March 6 According to Padamshri K.L. Zakir, the academy secretary, well-known Urdu poet Shamas Tabrezi was the workshop convener while Dr Renu Bahl, Dr Rehana Parveen and Rupa Saba acted as course leaders. The very propose of the workshop was to familiarise the students with finer shades of the Urdu language. Speaking at the culmination of the workshop, the Haryana commissioner for higher education, Shiv Raman Gaur, inspired the students to learn Urdu. He said Urdu is a rich and striking language. Gaur said an Urdu center with a regular tutor would be set up by the academy in the college, soon. |
