Now, Sidhu to spice up Punjabi cinema
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, February 5
After successfully flirting with TV, cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Sidhu is moving to big screen. He has been cast in a major role in director Manmohan Singh’s new Punjabi movie “Mera Pind--my home” along with singer-actor Harbhajan Mann.

In fact, launched here today, the movie by the eminent cinematographer-turned-director, basking under the success of his recent blockbuster “Mitti wajaan mardi”, would be a welcome departure from his earlier NRI-dominated productions. “It will our endeavour to send a strong message to Punjabis, who are somehow seen to be laid back in their approach, when it comes to working in their own land,” Manmohan Singh said.

The idea of the film, a joint production of AD Labs and Punj-Aab Movies, was to make the audience realise the importance of being an entrepreneur in your own land rather than showing your extraordinary entrepreneurship in far off lands in the West where Punjabis were fairly successful and hardworking. In fact, every Punjabi cannot go abroad and we must develop a work culture which respects the dignity of labour here, the acclaimed director said.

Mera pind--my home”, is essentially a film woven around the plot and backdrop of a Punjabi village with its typical characters and their own set of challenging circumstances. Sidhu plays a wealthy NRI, who returns to his roots and leads by example in practising the dignity of labour in Punjab.

Claiming that he had declined several Bollywood offers, Sidhu termed the subject of the film as very close to his heart. Being a Punjabi, I could relate to the character in the film more emphatically than anyone else.

“Let’s see where my role takes me”, Sidhu commented on his “dream debut”, adding that he was still open to good roles from the Bollywood.

Movie’s hero Mann said Manmohan Singh was synonymous with the success of the Punjabi films as was clear from blockbuster “Mitti wajaan maardi”, “Asaan nu mann watnaan da”, ”Jee aayaan nu”, “Yaaran naal baharaan” and “Dil apna Punjabi”. “In fact, Sidhu’s entry would prove to be a watershed in the Punjabi cinema as he was acclaimed as the youth icon,” he stated.

Portraying the hardships being faced by villagers in Punjab, the film will have some of the most-experienced Punjabi actors like Guggu Gill, Kimi Verma, Sarabjit Mangat, Deep Dhillon, Navneet Nishaan, Sheeba Bhakri, Rana Ranbir, Gurpreet Ghuggi and Darshan Aulakh. Lyrics by Babu Singh Mann and music is by Babloo Mahendru. Amrik Gill has written dialogues fro the film, which will be extensively shot in and around Chandigarh and slated for completion by March this year.

On piracy Sidhu, who is also an MP from Amritsar, said he would take up the matter of audio-visual piracy with the Punjab and Central governments. You wait for 15 days, Sidhu quipped when reminded of the false promises of politicians on the issue in the past.
