I asked my politician friend B.B. Behl as to why he didn’t try for some national award. He said, "What’s the need? My parents have already named me Bharat Bhushan so I don’t need to hanker after awards." I realised how intelligent were the parents who named their children Bharat Kumar or Rattan Singh. If you ask any Rattan Singh, "Bhaji, do you need a Bharat Ratna?" He would say, "Kise hore nu de davo, I don’t have time to go to Delhi." Many people in Punjab have their names Jarnail Singh, Karnail Singh, and Major Singh. They don’t feel the need to join the Army. And even if they are in the army they don’t depend on the Army to confer the ranks on them. Regarding the Bharat Ratna controversy triggered off by L.K. Advani proposing Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s name. One solution is to make a rule that every ruling party at the Centre should have the authority to confer this highest civilian award to a party leader of their choice once in five years. So the BJP could wait for their turn to come to power. The other way to make this award a laughing stock is by giving it away to people like me, Raju Srivastav, Johnny Lever or Navjot Singh Sidhu. People would then automatically stop aspiring for the Bharat Ratna.
