As Shaina Sikand, the lead star in Kahin Kissi Roz on Star Plus, Mouli Ganguly was one of TV’s top eyeball grabbers. But she quit the role at the height of her popularity. "I had reached a point of stagnation playing Shaina Sikand and wanted a life outside Kahin Kissi Roz."

She quickly picked up Sahara’s Sahib Biwi Ghulam, where she played the role essayed by Waheeda Rehman in Guru Dutt’s classic. In Saaksshi, she was part of an anti-terrorist squad. And then she got a movie break when starred in Rituparno Ghosh’s Raincoat with Ajay Devgan and Aishwarya Rai.

In those heady days Mouli would often say that a star’s life may look very glamorous to viewers but acting is hard work and it takes a lot out of you.

A time came when she dropped everything and walked away from showbiz.

A year later, Mouli is back not on the small screen but as lead star of an art film It’s a Man’s World. No, she says, she hasn’t given up on television but doesn’t want to go back to the cesspool of the soaps. "If there’s a challenging role, I’ll take it." Famous last words!— NF
