Bend it like St Stephen’s to reach the top
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, January 24
“With hard work and luck, we have become the first academy in the region to win Manchester United Premier Cup India Final-2008,” said jubilant members of St. Stephen’s Football Academy, Sector 45, here.

The (under 15) team, which returned yesterday from Goa after winning the top honours on January 20, is all set to leave for Kuala Lumpur where the Asian qualifying round will be held in June.

The team had lost in the semifinals to SBHS Club, Gurdaspur, but by sheer luck got a chance to play in the final as the four teams, including finalists SSA, Mizoram, and SBHS, were scratched by the All-India Football Federation for fielding overaged players.

St Stephen’s beat Mahindra United 1-0 to lift the trophy.

Excited team members Shubham, Sandesh, Nitin, Munish and Johny Chand told the Tribbune: “It was mere luck that we got a chance to play in the finals, but one can’t ignore the hard work we put in to reach the semifinals. God gave us opportunity and we just capitalised on it”.

Now the determined youngsters are in no mood to leave anything to luck. “We are depending on hard work and have started practise already. We can’t waste a single minute,”said the players.

Elated coach Surinder Singh and team manager Sandeep Singh said: “Top-class coordination, discipline and luck made us win. We know our grey areas, so work on those start right away. The boys need technical and tactical finesse”.

The icing on the cake is that two players, including skipper Harpreet Bedi and Taranjit Kumar, have been selected for the India u-16 coaching camp at Goa where the Indian team will be selected to participate in the AFC Cup to be held at Uzbekistan in September-October.

From India only two teams, East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, have participated so far in the Asian qualifying round of the tournament.

The winner in the Asian qualifying round will make it to the final round of the tournament at London.

A local court today convicted and sentenced Kulbir Singh to two-year imprisonment for stealing a mobile phone of a retired Punjab and Haryana judge, M.M. Aggarwal.

Holding him guilty of stealing the mobile phone, judicial magistrate Atul Marya also imposed a penalty of Rs 500 on the accused.

The prosecution said Kulbir Singh was posted as peon in the court of Justice M.M. Aggarwal in 2003 when he allegedly picked up the latter’s mobile phone.

After stealing the phone, Kulbir sold it to Vijay Kumar, who sold the set further. The EMI number of the set helped the UT police trace the cell to Ambala.

The judge observed: “The gravity of offence is further increased with the fact that the accused was working as servant to a sitting judge of the High Court. In these circumstances, if the accused is not dealt with harsh hand it will send a wrong signal to society and encourage such tendencies that are to be nipped in the bud. It is required not only to deter the convict from repeating offence but also others from committing such offence.”
