The Mohali police today busted a gang of highway robbers responsible for at least three murders and six armed robberies in Punjab and Haryana, leaving several persons grievously injured. The gang leader, Harpreet Singh, is a member of the Gulabgarh panchayat owning over 20 acres in the village.

Major traffic disruptions were witnessed in the main market of Pinjore with the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) continuing its anti-encroachment drive on the second day, near here today.

A team of health department today raided three premises at Burail village and seized huge quantity of “gachak” being allegedly prepared under unhygienic conditions.

The operations cell of the Chandigarh police arrested a Ram Darbar-based motor workshop owner and recovered a stolen car from him. The police said the accused was caught while dismantling the vehicle at his workshop.

‘Fake’ lecturer held
Chandigarh, January 11
The UT vigilance cell today arrested Amar Singh, a lecturer at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 22, on the charges of obtaining a fake MSc (Mathematics) degree. Sources said a case of cheating and forgery under Sections 420, 467, 468 and 471 of the Indian Penal Code was registered against him today on the complaint of the DPI (S).

Promotion in sight for UT school lecturers

Lecturers of the city’s government schools, who were waiting to get their due promotions for a long time, are in for a bonanza this March. For, the Chandigarh administration has decided to promote the lecturers to the grade of principal/head of the institutions. It has already finalised the long-pending seniority list of lecturers. It is for the first time that promotions (62) are taking place on such a massive scale.

PU dental institute’s recognition in jeopardy

State-of-the-art Dr H.S. Judge Institute of Dental Sciences at Panjab University (PU) is plagued with teething troubles. In fact, mushrooming of private dental colleges in Chandigarh's periphery seems to have taken a toll on the institute with acute shortage of faculty at the senior level putting a question mark on the recognition of the institute from the Dental Council of India (DCI).

The principal, staff and NSS volunteers of IS Dev Samaj Senior Secondary School-21C here, celebrated Lohri with a difference - the group visited occupants of Old Age Home at Sector 15, Bal Niketan, Sector 15, and Mother Teresa Home, Sector 23, and distributed woollen socks, warmers, notebooks, sweets, milk and fruits etc. A small cultural programme was also organised on the occasion.

The Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) organised a function to celebrate Lohri here toady. Dr Dalbir Singh Dhillon was the chief guest. Officers and employees of the board participated in the festival with enthusiasm. Ashmah International: Lohri celebrations were marked by exciting activities. Tiny tots dressed up in typical Punjabi dresses made the Lohri event look all the more colourful. A huge bonfire in the school playground set the tone for Lohri.

Simi Mehra, the country's top woman pro, clinched the seventh leg of the DLF Women's Professional Golf Tour as she rallied with a one-under return nine for a three-day tally of nine-over par 225 on the challenging 72-par greens of the Army Environmental Park and Training Area at Dhaula Kuan in Delhi today. Finishing nine strokes behind the leader was Nalini Singh who played a seven-over par 79 today.
