A ‘brief’ on style
Phiroze Kharegat

THE price quoted for what you call a men’s underwear (and more politely as inner wear) in the famous Hilfigers luxury wear shop of Bombay at Rs 900 really surprised me. One should be normally able to get 20 of the standard Indian brands for that money. When I checked with my contacts in the textile trade, they laughingly told me that the innerwear/underwear market for men is today buzzing with styles as varied and costly as those available to women.

The size of the Indian market is estimated at Rs 3000 crore and increasing at the rate of 10 per cent every year. But as yet only the middle class (300 million) has been taken into consideration, and with almost all top designers like Rohit Bal, Hemant Trivedi and Rocky S in the country launching their men’s lingerie line, it won’t be long before innerwear becomes the next fashion fad for men in India.

What kind of underwear should a man wear? Traditionally, men wore the same type of underwears their fathers wore. Today, fashion has become an increasingly important factor in the modern men’s lives, and purchasing the right underwear is a decision that might require some more thought.

More important is the factor that 67 per cent of men buy their own underwears now and are willing to experiment. (Till a decade ago it used to be that 80 per cent of men’s underwears were purchased by women—mostly wives—who only were willing to mention the brand and the size).

As per one survey, 57 per cent of men prefer briefs, 18 per cent prefer tight boxers and 29 per cent prefer roomy boxers. It is kind of ridiculous to judge how fashionable underwear is, especially since only rarely it is visible. But the modern meterosexual man will spend time on such detail, especially when he has an important date or when he knows that an extracurricular activity is going to take place.

There are actually five types to choose from, and you must know how to pick the right one that is suited for you, considering the nature of your work day requirements.

Boxers are more ‘chilled out’ when it comes to comfort. They are essentially shorts. Boxers are a good choice to wear under suits or loose-fitting trousers, like khakis. But if you are doing athletic activity, boxers are certainly not the appropriate attire.

A strong elastic waistband encircles the waist of the Y-shaped garment full-cut briefs. It sits two inches below the waist, at the belly button.

This style is not too different from the one mentioned above but as the name suggests, it sits two inches below the waist, at the belly button.

Low-waist briefs rest about three inches below the waist. Briefs are great to wear with a low-waist jeans. Stick to briefs, if your job entails walking around or attending meetings, since they provide support and the elasticity ensures they don’t bunch up when worn under trousers, or ride up. — MF
