Happy end, not yet

FOR the defiant couple, the elopement and secret marriage followed the pattern of a potboiler script, but the homecoming did not. When Srija and Sirish Bharadwaj returned to Hyderabad on November 11, after a three-week long stay in Delhi under police protection, there were no scenes of emotional re-union with the family. Nor was there any sign of rapprochement from the superstar’s family. It was clearly heading for an anti-climax. Except for the media, no one from Chiranjeevi’s family was present at the airport to receive the couple. The actor is said to have left for an unknown destination on a long holiday.

The lovebirds drove straight to their brand new apartment in the posh Begumpet area and posed for photograhs, offering sweets to each other. But behind the veneer of their "happily ever after" smiles lurked some disturbing questions: Why is Chiranjeevi and his family still maintaining silence?

Will they ever accept the marriage? Will things ever be the same again? It is said that the megastar is deeply disturbed, not just by Srija’s defiance but the way he was dragged to the court and her claims in media interviews about threat to her life from the family and the actor’s fans. There are also fears among his family members that the entire episode could have been part of a "conspiracy" to scuttle Chiranjeevi’s political ambitions.

Sources close to the actor said he had transferred huge money and properties in Srija’s name when she turned 18 last year. Around the same time, Sirish had "laid the trap and hurried her into the marriage", fearing she might change her mind if delayed. There are many who refuse to buy the innocent "boy meets girl" love story, raising several questions that remain unanswered. The most important among them is the source of finances for the couple. Who picked up their air travel bills, their lawyer fees, sponsored their stay in Delhi and arranged them a luxury apartment in Begumpet? Both Sirish and Srija are yet to complete their degree course. When asked about his source of income, Sirish said "God is giving us money." Interestingly, the couple has mellowed down since their fiery utterances soon after their secret marriage.

"I know my parents are hurt. I am sorry for it. I want them to accept me and invite me into the family," Srija said before her return to the city. "If we have caused them pain, we seek their pardon," Sirish added. The conciliatory tone is in sharp contrast to the strident note they had struck immediately after the marriage and also before the Delhi court where they sought police protection. — R.K.
