For art’s sake

A plaster cast of a fig leaf pictured during a recent exhibition entitled Seduced: Art and Sex from Antiquity to Now in London. The leaf was made for the private parts of Michaelangelo’s David and presented by the Grand Duke of Tuscany to Queen Victoria in 1857, who apparently requested that the huge figures genitals should be hidden from the view of women and children. The exhibition featured around 2,300 works spanning over 2,000 years and brought together works and curiosities from public and private collections in Britain, Europe and the United States. The exhibition aimed to generate a debate about shifting attitudes towards sexually explicit imagery, and to question the lines art and pornography. — AFP
