Safe drive
Jaspal Bhatti

The other day I read that most Punjabis hate to wear seatbelts while driving. By not wearing seatbelts, it seems that they show sympathy with the passengers who remain awfully unsafe during bus journeys.

Someone asked me if I didn’t think that seatbelts were more important for the passengers who experience jumpy rides on ill-maintained roads. I told him that the drivers are intelligent enough to jam pack the buses with passengers in such a way that they don’t get any space to wobble when they speed across wide ditches.

They could make the seatbelts compulsory for passengers who travel on rooftops.

An old woman boarded a roadways bus and soon regretted it because the driver turned out to be a rash one. He sped on roads, breaking all rules and speed limits. Neither any ditch nor a speed breaker caught his eyes. When the old one couldn’t take it any longer, she went up to the driver and said, “Putt, menu taan bada darr lag reha hai…I don’t know what to do?” The driver said, “Mataji, do as I do.”

“What do you do?” the woman asked.

“When I get afraid while driving, I simply shut my eyes,” the driver said.
