What attracted Rani Mukerjee to say yes to the offer to be cast as Natasha in Laaga Chunari Mein Daag was the beauty of the script. Says Rani, "The fact that the script talks about the eldest daughter trying to be the son of he house is something that lot of girls will relate to because every elder daughter is kind of pressurised to be the son of the house and Natasha in terms of what she does just to prove a point to her parents that she is the boy of the house is what makes the film very interesting."

Rani adds. "It’s a strong female character with an unconventional touch, it’s got shades of grey and that’s what has interested me about the character and the fact that she is not ashamed about what she has done, it is something that she has kind of accepted and goes with it and she is not apologetic about it. So I feel that is the strength of the character, that I am playing in the film".

According to Rani, the film starts off in Benaras, goes into Bombay, goes into Switzerland and comes back to Benaras and is about the growth of all the characters right from Benaras to Bombay to Switzerland`A0and how different they look after their growth but in the same setting and atmosphere and how life has changed for them, especially the two characters Badki and Chutki (played by her and Konkana Sen Sharma) and how Natasha’s character goes through the circle and the way the whole journey takes place in her life and how she comes back to her life in Benaras.

Rani says, "We shot in a haveli by the Ganga ghat. It was relaxing. The sunset at the Ganga ghats is to die for. We looked forward to sit by the Ganga in the evenings and just de-stress ourself. Switzerland is one of my favourite places in the world. It was fun shooting there because I went to Switzerland almost after six years. All your worries and tensions come to a standstill when you enter Switzerland because it is so peaceful, quiet and no pollution that it feels wonderful".

There were quite a few memorable incidents during the shoot of the film, according to Rani, "I have many memories while shooting for Laaga Chunari Mein Daag. My first day of the shoot at Benaras I had got hurt on my nose because Konkana was supposed to play with this rattle and that wooden toy just flung on my nose and I got a cut which started bleeding that was a very memorable moment for me because I was so nervous as it was the first day of the shoot where we had not shot any of my close up and I feared that it would swell up and look bad and we might not be able to shoot. But luckily we had a first-aid kit with us. It was great fun because Dada, I, Konkana and Jayaji, all were speaking in Bengali. So finally, we just said at one point we should just mouth our speech in Hindi otherwise it would turnout to be a Bengali film".

It is for the first time that Rani has worked with Pradeep Sarkar in a film, though she has acted in his ad films. Talking about Pradeep Sarkar, Rani says, "Pradeep Dada has an eye for detail. He is so particular about the way his actors look and that’s wonderful because so many times we actors concentrate on our scene and we don’t realise how we are looking. Dada exactly knows how to shoot which character in which way and has no hang ups to work with. He comes across as a small child like if he wants something out of us, he will go to an extent of even crying so we treat him like the big teddy bear on our sets whom we can sometimes bully and have fun with. But at the end of it, Dada is wonderful to work with. I love working with him, because I am always at my jovial best with him. The whole unit was just so wonderful to work with that my entire experience with Laaga Chunari Mein Daag has been fantastic." — MF
