SHORT TAKES The Bodos
by Sujit Choudhury Less than a million strong, Bodos’ ancestry can be traced back to the tribes that came from northwestern China between 2 BC and 1 AD and settled down in the plains of Assam. They speak a language of Tibeto-Burman origin and have been in news for agitating for a separate state. But, as this book points out, theirs is one of the several discordant voices emanating from Assam which, despite the Ahom predominance, is a conglomerate of several ethnic and tribal groups. Like any other minority in a multi-ethnic milieu, Bodos too are fiercely protective of and jingoistic about their tribal identity, bringing them in conflict with the established socio-political hierarchy. This book traces the history of the present-day Bodos, their socio-religious structure and practices, and their political aspirations. This well-researched dissertation helps us understand better the people who burst onto media headlines for their violent actions. Globalisation and Development
by Sunanda Sen
When the emaciated Indian economy was opened up it was believed that its restructuring and integration with the emerging global economic order would by itself remove poverty – or at least reduce it to minimal levels. While Sen acknowledges that the new economic regime has catapulted India to the ranks of high-growth economies, he points to the skewed distribution of the newly generated wealth. The much-touted trickle-down effect has failed to materialise. This book provides snapshots of globalisation, viz., its history, its track-record in Latin America, its social, political and economic implications both in the global as well as Indian contexts.
