It’s all in the jeans

The perfect fit and the right style are the key to your jean wearing, writes Hector Choksi

Remember the days when for you the most valuable dress in your wardrobe was the jeans? For you their versatility mattered more than their price (which was often very high), as it was the garment you can wear around the house/workplace/ casual outings. But nowadays with so many versions in the market, it often becomes difficult to choose the perfect one for you. Let us visualise what are we looking for when trying to get the best pair of jeans suited for you.

There are basically three types of jeans. First preference should be for the original blue jeans, which have evolved from the rough and tumble evolution to be a champion versatile piece. But if you want a denim type that would be casual, then the slightly faded blue jeans are for you. Another type, known as the ‘dirty denim," is the one with a faded brownish rusty colour or blue dirty shade. In fact this is said to be more stylised than the regular blue jeans and has withstood the test of time.

Flashy colours like red should be avoided when buying jeans, as well black or white variety as they are not favoured by the connoisseurs of fashion.

Another most important factor is the occasion. If you are the type who wears only suits to work, then you have less restrictions while selecting the jeans, which would be mainly for going out or just lounging in the house. But if your workplace says OK for jeans, then denim jeans would fit the bill. Still, it is advisable to be conservative in your jean style as the key word is subtlety in dressing, and ensure that your jeans match well with the footwear, which can be sneakers/dress shoes/ boots.

The perfect fit/the right style are the key to your jeans wearing. The flare in your jeans is the style maker. One has to stay clear of the tapered pants.

Like in any other dress, if the fit is not correct for you, the money spent on jeans is wasted. The most important areas are the legs/crotch and waist, which should not be too tight. The jeans should also look good when seen from behind. Often you will find that you have to try a number of styles before selecting the correct one.

One mistake we are liable to make while buying a pair of jeans is that we often forget the shrinking factor. If the jeans are slightly longer, then you can fold them over or make the required alterations.

Just like buying a pair of shoes, it is essential that after the purchase of the new jeans that there should be a trial run. Walk around the store and ensure that the pocket space and your level of comfort is OK when you sit down. Can the pocket handle your wallet and your keys?

Another important check is that you should wear the belt you use most when trying the new jeans. This will help to show where the waist falls on you, or if the jeans/ belt combination is alright, or if the loops can hold your belt comfortably.

Similarly, just like the belt, you also must try the jeans with the shoes you use most. This ensures that in addition to the colours matching, you can also check as to how the pants fall. If the length is too much, fold them over to the necessary extent, so that you will have an idea as to how they will look when hemmed. The basic principle is that the back cuff and the top part of the sole of the shoe should align.

The brand of jeans you buy should have been pre-shrunk, as there is nothing as irritating like as jeans that shrinks and yet was perfect on purchase. Having bought the jeans, you have to ensure that they are washed before they are hemmed. Just to be safe though, take off a little less than necessary when having them hemmed. If you need an inch taken off, go for two-thirds of an inch instead, which will buffer any future shrinkage.

For the first wash, it is essential that you soak them alone. Then, as a precaution, wash the jeans inside out, so that the overall look and colour can be maintained. Then it is equally necessary that you do not use the dryer, but lay the jeans on a towel to dry or if possible they are hung so that no part of the jeans gets folded over.

The time you spent on trying these points on your jeans would be worthwhile if you want the jeans best suited for you. — MF
