Crime and capers

The Naked Gun (September 16 at 8 pm) on HBO is a hilarious comedy which is an out-and-out family watch. This is the first in the trilogy of the bumbling Inspector Frank Drebin’s adventures against crime.

Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) fancies himself a sauv`E9 and self-styled James Bond kind of a sleuth. After getting into all sorts of comic scrapes and mishaps, he still manages to solve the crime and nab the bad guys.

With the stunning Jane Spencer (Elvis Presley’s wife Priscilla) as his partner, Drebin embarks on his most dangerous and laugh-aloud mission yet — to protect the visiting Queen Elizabeth from an assassination attempt at a baseball game. The result is a series of unmitigated and rib-tickling disasters.

So pop the corn and get ready for a film which will have you smiling for days to come.

Sequel saga

Dill Mill Gayye…the sequel is a flop show
Dill Mill Gayye…the sequel is a flop show

When he made a sequel to Jurassic Park, Steven Spielberg said, "There’s never the right formula when you are making a sequel. The original film doing good business is no assurance that the next one would be a hit as well."

The quote holds true for many Indian serial makers. There are sequels to some of the most successful serials, including Hum Paanch, Nukkad, Tu Tu Main Main, Office Office and now, Dill Mill Gayye. The common feature about them is that they are all flops.

Though a sequel to a hit does usually ensure a good opening, the chemistry for high TRPs remains the same — a powerful storyline, good performances and a racy script. Most sequel makers are fast realising that tastes are changing fast and after the initial curiosity, viewers move on to racier shows. — NF
