Tagore songs, popularly known as Rabindra Sangeet, can now be heard in Oriya as well, thanks to upcoming singer Trupti Panda. She has assorted 24 songs out of about 2,400 compositions of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore and rendered them in her mother tongue Oriya (also in its original Bengali) in double-CD packs.

Rabindra Sangeet is a complete body of songs and lyrical poetry written and composed by the Nobel laureate. It has evolved into a distinctive school of music.

The two albums, He Jibananath and Nupura Baje Rini Rini, consist of 12 soul-elevating songs each. While the first album includes devotional songs published in Gitanjali (which won the poet the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913); the second is a collection of love songs. The lyrics have been translated into Oriya by Ananta Charan Sukla, a retired professor of English and a scholar of international repute. Eminent music and video director Deepak Kumar has supervised the recording done at Cuttack by recordist Pintu Mishra.

The selected songs happen to be popular among Rabindra Sangeet lovers. Panda has brilliantly captured the moods and nuances of the songs. She has also handled the Bengali version well.

Inspired by Prasar Bharati’s project to popularise Tagore songs in all regional languages of India, Panda decided to record 48 songs in Oriya and Bengali. On May 9 (Tagore’s 146th birthday) this year, a set of 10 VCDs with 40 Tagore songs rendered by celebrated artists like Ustad Rashid Khan, Ajoy Chakravorty, Anup Jalota et al were released by the Prime Minister. Last year, Panda released her debut album Eka Eka Bhala Lagena.

Gifted with a melodious voice, Panda, who hails from Garadpur in Kendrapara district, has been trained in classical music by Pt. Gopal Panda. She has lent her voice to Oriya albums, modern and devotional, and performed live in various prestigious platforms.
