Filmmaker Woody Allen is set to direct his first opera with Giacomo Puccini’s comedy Gianni Schicchi. According to Placido Domingo, the Broad general director of the Los Angeles Opera, the director was approached for the project four years ago and it’s only now that he has agreed to work on it. "I’ve seduced many a film director into directing opera, starting with John Schlesinger and The Tales of Hoffmann at London’s Covent Garden. I will admit that my pursuit of Woody takes the prize of the longest pursuit," Variety quoted Domingo, as saying. It looks like Allen is still not sure about his foray into directing an opera show but he insisted that he has always been skilful to do any project. "I have no idea what I am doing, but incompetence has never prevented me from plunging in with enthusiasm," Allen said. The project will be produced as part of Il Trittico or The Triptych, the title of the three one-act operas Il tabarro, Suor Angelica, and Gianni Schicchi, by Puccini, the latter two being directed by William Friedkin. Puccini’s production will start on September 6, 2008. Il Trittico
is quite balanced. Il tabarro, the first act, is very dark and
brooding. Suor Angelica, the second act, Puccini’s personal
favourite, is an up-lifting tale of religious redemption. Gianni
Schicchi, the third act, is the most popular, a comedic farce full
of greed and conniving. —ANI
