‘Hero’ barber’s centenary celebrations

The birth centenary celebrations of Variappan, a barber who refused to serve the British way back in 1930, was recently celebrated by the people of Vedaranyam, near Porayar in Tamil Nadu.

Procesions were taken out through the main thoroughfares before culminating at the Variappan memorial pillar, where former Mayiladuthurai MP P V Rajendran unveiled his portrait and appealed to the Centre to release a postage stamp in his name and provide jobs to his two sons.

As per records, Variappan was sentenced to six months rigorous imprisonment and sent to Vellore jail for refusing to continue cutting the hair of a constable in plainclothes, whom a passerby identified as working for the British.

The constable took Vairappan to the local magistrate, who ordered him to finish his work, but he refused and was jailed. Variappan passed away on August 15, 1997, the year in which the golden jubilee of Independence was celebrated. — PTI
