Coffee with class

Classy, tasteful, inspirational, expensive. A coffee table book is an expressive pictorial voyage. But, are these books cherished and well read or simply occupy space? Purva Grover finds out

Gorgeous design, glossy paper, stunning pictures and bulky size. The over sized books placed in your living room make up for the perfect starting point of an interesting conversation. Whether you pick one up for its visual delight or for its minimal expressive text, you will end up opening up the coffee table book from time to time.

Says Nandini Atmaram, a first year student at GCG, “I have a collection of twenty of these books. They are well-worded and carry amazing pictures.” An avid reader, you will find her buried in books most of the time. She gets Rs 2000 as monthly pocket money, and it is hardly surprising that her budget spells a book a month. “It is perhaps the best investment that one can have.” A die-hard fan of rock bands, her favourite is The Doors by The Doors with Ben-Fong-Torres, which traces the journey of the band. Bought for Rs 1,800, she feels it’s worth every penny spent.

Another prized possession is a book that captures the culture of a genre of music, titled Rock And Pop — The Complete Story by Michael Heatly. “This one was a little easier on the pocket,” she smiles. “I just love the way the story is portrayed in these books, it is a perfect balance of small captions and beautiful pictures,” she smiles. Next, she wishes to expand her collection of biographies.

And, while it is music for Nandini, it is automobiles for Ravipal Singh Mann. For Mann, the founder of The Chandigarh Vintage and Classic Car Foundation, a day is incomplete without a glance at the Automobiles of the Maharajas. Authored by Sharada Dwivedi, the book forays into the world of automobiles. And, what’s interesting is that Mann finds a place in the acknowledgment list. He says, “ I had an interaction session with the author stretching to all most three days.” Ask him his favourites, and you know what will follow. Roadsters by Don Spiro, Great Car Coll of the World and many more, with each book exploring the facets and wonders of the car.

Mann owes his interest in books to the reading habits he developed in his childhood. “ I would spend the whole day at the library in YPS, Patiala. A visit to the nearby library and book shop keeps me going,” he says. “I would not mind going hungry to buy a book,” he says. “I have been lucky at times and picked up fine books from the vendors in Daryaganj in Delhi,” he adds. His latest purchase is a peep into Bangalore, which he picked up for a mere Rs 130.

One look at the over 100 hugely presented books piled up in the living room of Pritam Singh and you are short of words to describe his passion. A retired surgeon, he says, “I literally breathe books.” Besides, his private library, every other room is also home to these books. Ask him to choose his favourite out of these and he picks up Gurdwaras in India and around the world by Patwant Singh. Singh purchased it around 15 years back, he claims the book is probably the first ever book that gives you a pictorial religious tour. Another series close to his heart is related the maharajas, including – Maharaja Jewels by Assouline and The Maharaja by Dwivedi. “The pages are filled with lots of photographs and illustrations,“ he says. “It is for anyone who prefers small captions to long prose,” he adds. Singh’s most expesnive purchase, rather investment as he calls is Indian States for Rs 7000.

Another book lover from the city is Mohanpal Singh Sidhu. “I have been collecting coffee table books for more than four decades now,” he says. He bought the first book in 1970 from Guwahati. Titled, Art treasures of the world by Hamlyn, he presented this book as a gift to his wife. Ask him why a coffee table book and he’s quick to say, “Don’t they make wonderful gifts?” His collection boasts of fifty of these books on subjects like wildlife, art, history, monuments, and autobiographies. He picks his favourites for us, Majesty of the Horse by Whittlesey, Picturesque India by Jagmohan Mahajan and Maharaja Ranjit Singh by Jean Marie La font. He says, “They are pictorial and descriptive. Why read volumes of text, when you can add to your knowledge bank by glancing at these wonderful works of art?” Well said.

Mask it right
Pammy Kaul

Good skin comes from having a good facial skin care regime, where your skin is able to heal, cleanse and renew itself. Facial masks are an essential step towards having a good complexion and also for the health of your skin. To maintain a good texture and complexion, you must adjust your facial skin care mask routine according to the seasons and the type of your skin. Let a skin therapist examine and recognise your skin type. Classing yourself as oily or dry for lifetime is not fair, as with the passage of time your skin changes too.

Face masks have been used as part of beauty treatments since ancient times. You can obtain younger, finer textured skin and better skin tone with face masks. However your skin response is governed by how well you take care of it. Without doubt the regular use of face masks can make you look young and radiant. I always encourage people with allergy prone skin and sensitive skin to stick to home made masks rather than the commercial ones which contain chemicals and preservatives and can possibly irritate the skin. Helpful: Before applying mask, use an exfoliant to remove dead skin cells for optimal skin penetration. Always remove masks with tepid water and clean cloth.

I have oily skin but do not have the time to look after my face but I do exfoliate regularly. Please guide me as I would love to have a smooth and improved texture of skin.

Exfoliate only once a week — facial scrubs or exfoliaters contain fine grains that help to remove dead cells. The scrub should be massaged into the skin in gentle circular motion and rinsed away thoroughly. Your skin will soften and brighten with weekly use. Stay clear of over buffing as it will only over stimulate and cause irritation to the skin.

Masks should not take more than twenty minutes of your time each week. Use of regular masks is important and when done religiously it serves the purpose of removing dirt and grime. It aids the cell renewal process while removing excess oil on the surface and skin pores. However, choosing the right mask remains very important. Camphor aids in activation of microcirculation, cooling and refreshing the skin. Menthol refreshes and stimulates. Titanium dioxide soothes and unifies the complexion. The all time favourite for oily skin are clay and mud-based cleansing masks for improving the skin condition.

I am forty plus and have had oily skin all my life. But over the years I have lost the oiliness. Nothing seems to moisturise any more! Please suggest.

Many people fail to recognise the difference between water-dry and oily-dry skin. When your skin feels tight but still has the presence of oil, it is water-dry. When you wash your face with a strong face cleanser it leaves your skin feeling dry and tight but in a few hours there is oil on the surface, this is known as water-dry skin. Whereas oily-dry skin remains to be tight and dry and will not feel the oil on the surface in a few hours because the body is not producing enough oil to cover and protect the skin.

Age remains an important factor in skin dehydration and dryness, as the oil glands start to slow down making the skin vulnerable. Dry skin always demands heavy constant moisturising. Masks for your type skin type need to include oil as well as moisture to replace the oil the body is not producing and moisture lost through evaporation from the skin. Avocado oil (vitamin enriched) helps to moisturise and nourish skin. For added benefits apply honey as a mask as it will put moisture in your skin. Apply rich cold cream mask for moisturising dry skin. Leave the cream on your skin and let skin absorb as much of the cream as possible. Wipe off excess with a soft tissue.

BON APPETIT
Kofte with a twist
Kandla Nijhowne

Most cuisines across the globe will have some form of dumplings or the other, either prepared from mince or veggies, be it fried, broiled, steamed or barbequed. The minute the aroma of a well-cooked kebab wafts through a room, all eager eyes, twitching noses and ready forks will turn in that direction! We think that koftas are very Hindustani, but allow me to dispel that illusion. Kuftas, qofte, keftedes and cufte flourish all over Africa, the Mediterranean, Central Europe and Asia. Turkey alone boasts 291 different kinds! Usually shaped like cigars, they are an integral part of the Turkish cuisine. Here’s just one of them, and a popular croquette recipe as well.

Turkish Kofte

2 slices bread, crusts removed

500 gm minced lamb

1 medium onion, grated

2 tbsp chopped mint

1 tbsp chopped parsley

2-3 cloves garlic, crushed

Tip of the Week

To ensure a perfect croquette, the mashed potatoes must be very dry. Steam halved potatoes instead of boiling them. If the mash continues to look sticky, spread it on a wide tray and let it dry in a warm oven for 10-15 minutes prior to shaping.

1 egg

Salt, pepper

75 gm flour (maida)

Oil for frying

Method

Soak the bread in milk for a few minutes, then squeeze out the excess liquid. Combine all the ingredients except the flour and the oil till they are evenly mixed. Do not use too much salt, as that makes the mince “weep”. Spread out the flour on a plate, shape the mince into cylindrical cigar shapes and roll lightly in the flour. Fry (deep or shallow), in hot oil till evenly golden in colour. Serve with grated carrots, grilled tomatoes, bell peppers, rice and a salad.

Crumb-fried croquettes

1 Kg potatoes

40 gm butter

Salt, pepper and nutmeg to taste

3 egg-yolks

150 gm of one of the following-sautéed onion, ham, grated cheese, stir-fried mushrooms or nuts

Flour, an egg and bread-crumbs for coating

Oil for frying

Method

Boil the potatoes, peel them, then mash thoroughly. Combine them with the butter, yolks, seasoning and one additional ingredient of your choice from the given options. With a slightly wet pair of hands, shape the mixture into rectangular” pillows”. Roll them in flour, as for the previous recipe, lay out on a tray, and refrigerate for 15-20 minutes. Beat the egg lightly with a pinch of salt and keep ready in a wide bowl. Lay out the bread-crumbs on a platter. Heat sufficient oil for frying. Dip the croquettes in beaten egg, then a quick roll in the crumbs and straight into the frying pan! Remove when crisp and golden and serve hot.

Cool sizzle
Beat the heat by indulging in oriental sweet delights, a combo of hot and cold desserts
Purva Grover

Vinay Malik
Photos by Vinay Malik

A sizzling hot jalebi straight from the halwai’s pan with a dollop of lip smacking ice cream is probably the yummiest treat for anyone with a sweet tooth. Well, a combination of hot and cold dessert does sound mouthwatering at any time of the year. And, how would it be if you can bite into hot melted chocolate rolled in a pancake with a scoop of ice cream. Hmm…now if the idea excites you then Purple Rice, Sector 35 is the place you should be heading to.

An eatery that opened this February, it offers authentic Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Indonesian cuisine. And, standing true to its tagline, the desserts at the oriental wok café too come with an oriental touch. Here, you can savor chocolate spring rolls, fried ice creams, litchi wantons, darson with kajuput, date pancake and apple cinnamon spring rolls. And, each delight comes to your table with a scoop of ice cream and a fresh pudina leaf as garnishing.

Says Ajay Tewari, operations manager, “The idea of hot and cold dessert excites all. We are trying to cache in on that.” The hot selling delight here is the chocolate spring roll. We peep into the open kitchen to find out the secret behind the yummy delight. A bar of dark chocolate is melted and then used as a filling in the spring rolls. Another flavour in the roll is apple and cinnamon.

Another must try is date pancake that will remind you of the Indian sweet gujiya. You can bite into this sweet puff that will leave you with a sugary taste. Another, must try is the fried ice cream; which is a double scoop of vanilla ice cream coated with a mix of coconut powder and bread crumbs. And, while you may find it difficult to describe this fried chilled item, you will surely want more of it.aIf it is a fruity delight that you are keen on, then bite into litchi wantons. “We are using canned litchi,” tells Tewari. Next, on their cards is to play with a combo of mango and dimsums. Also, soon they will be bringing a popular Southeast Asian dessert called Katchang. “The dessert is to be eaten in flat one minute,” smiles Tewari. And, he hands us a book on Thai cuisine from the restaurant’s book corner to read more on it. It is a combination of red beans, ice creams and crushed ice; and comes with a topping of strawberry and honey syrup. So, all you foodies, beat the summer sizzle with these hot n’ cold desserts.

Grapes, tea & cocoa helps boost memory

A study of mice has shown that a natural compound found in blueberries, tea, grapes, and cocoa has the potential to enhance memory, and that its effects further increase when combined with regular exercise.

The compound pointed at by the researchers is epicatechin, one of a group of chemicals known as flavonols that has been shown previously to improve cardiovascular function in people and increase blood flow in the brain.

In the latest study, Dr. Henriette van Praag of the California based Salk Institute for Biological Studies and her colleagues found that the combination of exercise, and a diet with epicatechin promoted structural and functional changes in the dentate gyrus.

Published in The Journal of Neuroscience, their findings suggest that a diet rich in flavonols may help reduce the incidence or severity of neurodegenerative disease or cognitive disorders related to ageing. “This finding is an important advance because it identifies a single natural chemical with memory-enhancing effects, suggesting that it may be possible to optimize brain function by combining exercise and dietary supplementation,” says Dr Mark Mattson at the National Institute on Ageing. – ANI
