Fake encounters in Gujarat have grabbed headlines in newspapers, rocked Parliament and remained a hot issue of debate on various channels. But I am surprised about the hue and cry because when everyone around you is a fake, how can you expect a police encounter to be a genuine one? People first get admissions furnishing fake affidavits, and then they clinch jobs on the basis of fake degrees. Hundreds of doctors practise on fake degrees hung outside their clinics. There’s quite a likelihood that the medicine you get from the chemist’s turns out to be fake. If the patient dies, his or her family members continue using the ration card in the person’s name to immortalise him. Sometime a fake vote is also cast in a dead man’s name to keep the spirit of democracy alive. Everyday we hear that many dreaded terrorists who were declared dead during the days of terrorism in Punjab are still alive with fake names. One thing that is very strange is that ‘fake’ people or fake things look more genuine than the originals. I asked my friend Jogi
Sahib, who is a senior citizen, as to how our courts and judges can
nail so many fake people around. "They should set up special fake
courts to deal with the fake professionals speedily", he said,
removing his denture and immersing it in a glass of water.
