Geelani under house arrest
Prevented from addressing Friday congregation
Tribune News Service

Srinagar, May 18
Hardliner APHC chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani was kept under house arrest at his residence here today to prevent him from addressing a Friday congregation at a mosque near a tourist reception centre in Civil Lines.

Talking to journalists at his Hyderpora residence later in the afternoon, Geelani decried the restrictions being imposed on his activities by the state government.

He said this move was aimed at stopping him from putting forth his point of view. This, he said, was an undemocratic step taken by the government.

Geelani held that mainstream political parties, on the other hand, were given due facilities to put forth their point of view across the valley.

Restrictions on his party meetings exposed the intentions of the government, he alleged. He, however, added that the “freedom struggle” would continue “with or without Geelani”.

He reiterated his demand for the right of self determination for the people of the state as the only solution to the long- pending Kashmir issue. He blamed the government for not allowing him to offer Friday prayers.
