Passion. Loyalty. Romance. Lust. Love. Stress. Sex. Emotions tend to run amok in any metro city in India. Anurag Basu’s Life in a Metro is all about this and more. Life becomes a roller-coaster ride of emotions that run a race against each other, against time, against people who may or may not be your near and dear ones. Malls, multiplexes, cars, metros, there is just no stopping an Indian city from growing—vertically, horizontally, financially, the works. This also means increasing distances between and among people, among the Jumping Jacks and the Peeping Toms and the Plane Janes and the Dumb Blondes.

Metro weaves the story of people who are happening; people who want things to happen; people who wish things would happen; people who make things happen. In their rush to reach their targets, they discover that their emotional lives have gone for a toss. Shikha (Shilpa Shetty) is a bored housewife who craves love. Her life changes when she meets a stranger at a railway station. Akash (Shiney Ahuja) is a ‘failure’ by normal standards. He could not hold on to a job or to his wife. The only thing he holds dear is his values. Neha (Kangana Ranaut) is fast learning that some short cuts are too long and that changing lanes is not easy. Ranjeet (Kay Kay Menon) is the one in control. He keeps everyone on their toes, including his family. What happens when he loses control on himself? Rahul (Sharman Joshi) literally holds the keys to his own success. Life is a smooth ride until he accidentally discovers that his dream has changed direction. Shruti (Konkona Sen), 30, is still single and a virgin. She believes that since she has just one life to live, she cannot afford to choose the wrong man to live it with. She finally finds one of the most impossible guys she ever would have imagined. He is Debu (Irrfan Khan) who has broken all signals in search of love.

"Life in a Metro deals with the essence of a city life and the rat race in the urban concrete jungle. The film brings to reel life the concept of a real city in modern times", says Anurag Basu who, after his first film Saaya, which did not do too well, pulled his act together to deliver films such as Murder and Gangster, showcasing his courage in dealing with genres as different as a nostalgic, romantic ghost story on the one hand and a sex thriller on the other. "I have tried to show the realities of everyday lives of ordinary people in Metro. In my interpretation, Metro is a celebration of life, the life we all enjoy and crave for in the chaos of daily life", he sums up.

The other strong point of Metro is its music. Anurag Basu has brought together a melting pot of musical talent in the name and style of Pritam and Friends, or, what he has decided to re-christen Band Metro, a musical group featuring Pritam Chakraborty, performer Soham Chakraborty, singers Suhail, James and mixing guru Eric Pillai. "I decided on this to bring the mood and the pulse of the film to life," says Basu.

Beginning with Naseeruddin Shah’s Yun Hota to Kya Hota through Salaam-e-Ishq to Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd, Hindi cinema is coming to terms with the nitty- gritties of life. The latest entry into this multi-coloured world is Anurag Basu’s new film Life in A Metro. Produced by UTV Motion Pictures, Life in a Metro is a jet-paced, racy film where the pace intensifies rather than dilutes the volatile changes in and among the relationships within the major characters that inhabit it.
