Apni Roshni

Kaun banega Star ka star? No lifeline needed for this one. Star Plus has already frozen its option. A soap starring a city girl will replace the SRK-hosted KBC Saurabh Malik

She is all set to make it big on the small screen! After sashaying away from the corridors of existence in Chandigarh ’s downtown to the hallways of glamour in the tinsel world, doe-eyed city girl Ashima Bhalla is all decked up to replace Shah Rukh Khan on the prime slot.

Just in case you still haven’t guessed, Bhalla is primed for filling the blankness KBC’s exit could have created on Star Plus. Coming Monday, you will see her slipping in the role of an ‘ever-loving’ and ‘charming’ character, Sudha, in the primetime show — Meri Awaz Ko Mil Gayi Roshni.

The soap opera is scheduled to be aired at 9 pm from Monday to Thursday every week from April 23 as the first season of ‘KBC with SRK’ comes to a close. It marks the foray of FOX Television’s on Indian TV and that’s undoubtedly impressive.

Ask Bhalla and she smiles: "For me, it’s the beginning of a new episode in my life. I have glided up the ramp of popularity not just in this part of the region, but across the country; have even performed before the arch-lights in South Indian blockbusters and Bollywood flicks. But it’s nothing compared to the contentment I am deriving out of acting in a serial".

Talking on the phone from Mumbai, Bhalla says: "You see, television is a powerful media that helps you to remain in people’s memory on day to day basis. It gives you an opportunity to improve and improvise at a very short notice. On the other hand, in movies you have to wait till the release for judging your performance, and sometimes it is too late".

In a deep voice, she adds: "Thank god, I have never had to face it, but in case of a flop flick, you are Miss Nobody. You have to start all over again; struggle; meet new people, exhibit your talent; and once more wait for the big break."

Returning back to her cheerful self, the chirpy little angel says: "But I firmly believe serials should go on only till there is some logic in the story line. Adding twists and turns may sustain the viewer’s interest for some time, but giving a serial irrational dimension is just not justified."

Convinced of the new serial’s success, she says: "People need a heady mixture of reality shows and serials they can associate themselves with. That’s why I think, the audience’s attention will comfortably shift from KBC to Meri Awaz."

Right, but replacing a SRK-hosted show involves a lot of responsibility. Does that worry her? "Well, no one can take his place. That’s for sure. I, on my part, am practically working round the clock without day-offs to make it into the hearts of the audience. And, I am keeping my fingers crossed".

For this S.D. College pass-out, it all started in Sector 17. She says: "I was trotting down the corridors with my sister when a couple of strangers asked me to participate in Ms Valentine’s pageant. Initially, I was reluctant, but then I succumbed to their pleas and succeeded. After that, there was no looking back. I became Miss North India 2000. Since then, I have traveled far. And will continue to move up the popularity charts with viewers’ support." Keep it up Ashima. Chandigarh ’s watching you.

Visiting high-end salons is no longer an occasional affair

She doesn’t need an opportunity to celebrate life. For her, existence itself is a reason itself to rejoice.

No wonder, Romila Nanda goes out with friends on Saturday nights for marking the weekend; or else jives all the way to delight on Wednesday afternoons for celebrating the spirit of summers. But before venturing out, the Sector 19 resident goes to a salon for tiding up her looks.

And she is not the only one. As more and more youngsters are wakening up to the need for looking gorgeous, the salons across the city are giving new look to the customers mostly on the basis of appointments. Of course, because of an increase in the rush!

What’s your style?

She has given Preity Zinta a new look in Bollywood blockbusters. Even Aishwarya Rai has been consulting her. So when Sandrine Verrier says Indian women can “carry everything” in hair, right from blonde to red, you have no reason to doubt her. After presenting creative cuts and colours in line with Schwarzkopf’s ‘Essential Look’ adapted for the Indian market, she says: “A little straight, not so flat, hair with bounce are in, along with layers.” You can go in for “Boho” style. It’s a combination of different shades of red, over-directed round graduations with a rounded fringe and a broken veil with disheveled edges. Or else, you can opt for “Prim”. It is hard angular fringe in shades of blonde skimmed over the eyes with extreme contrast of length and colour. For look of the season, Sandrine suggests green and bronze make-up for the eyes, along with bronze mascara.

“In days that are no more, people would visit the salons just before ladies’ sangeet, wedding ceremonies or other such occasions,” says creative artiste with Schwarzkopf Sandrine Verrier. “For all other occasions, they would visit the neighbourhood beauty parlor, or else make themselves up in on their own.”

In Chandigarh, for the inauguration of Azzaro, Schwarzkopf Professional’s exclusive salon in Sector 22, Sandrine from France says: “But now things are changing. With money in their pockets, the youngsters do not think twice before planning a visit to a salon for looking good in everyday life.”

Agreeing with her, the German multinational corporation’s country manager Ashok Namboodiri says: “Dough is not an issue with the youngsters. As the information technology industry is logging on to development, and the call centres are growing at a rapid pace; job opportunities for the freshers and their buying capacities are increasing. Timely change in jobs has also sent their incomes swirling up. To top it all, they are more than willing to spend money on themselves.”

Taking you around the salon just before a fashion parade to showcase the look of the season, he says: “They now wish to look good not just at standard parties organised every now and then, but even at the workplace.”

The phenomenon is limited not just to Chandigarh. It is in other towns of Punjab as well. No wonder, Schwarzkopf Professional alone is catering to the beauty need of the young professionals through a chain of over 30 high-end exclusive salons in cities like Ludhiana, Amritsar and Jalandhar. In fact, the company plans to come up with another salon at Ludhiana by next month.

This is not all. The company’s senior manager training and new customer development Arpana Punwani says they are soon coming up with special day and night-time products just for the partying crowd. What else do you need to rejoice your days? — S. M.

Obsession No.1

Producer Vashu Bhagnani’s romance with titles with ‘No. 1’ suffixes continues

He is considered as the master of comedy. He made us laugh in his numerous films. Starting with Coolie No 1 way back in 1995 till Shaadi No 1 recently, producer Vashu Bhagnani’s fancy for ‘Number 1’ isn’t over yet. In a telephonic interview, he tells more about his obsession with Number 1.

Shifting focus between producing films and constructing buildings, for Vashu, Bollywood has always been another outlet for his creativity. "When I shifted base from Delhi to Mumbai, I was naturally inclined towards making films," says Bagnani.

But not everyone knows that this producer of over 60 films is like any other Hindi film jingoist, a Big B fan. "So much so that every alternate day I would stand outside ‘Jalsa’ (Amitabh’s bunglow) and wait there for hours to catch a glimpse of the superstar," shares Vashu. And years later, he casted Big B in his laughter riot Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and more recently this Bachhan fan bought a plot right next to Jalsa to construct his building no. 1— ‘Pinnacle-the dream’.

More recently, Vashu has been chosen as one of the panellists for special advisory panel along with Nagesh Kukunoor and Kundan Shah for Star Gold’s Comedy Honours. "This is the first time that such an effort is being made in the history and this is exactly the reason for me being up there," articulates Vashu.

Since the first comedy film till now, how far has the comedy genre arrived in Indian cinema, we question. "No doubt the standard of comedy has really gone up. People want to watch films that can help them release stress but on the flip-side there is a new league of cheap humour with double meaning one-liners has also come up," he muses.

Very soon the producer is going to launch his son Jacky in films. "He has taken a formal training in acting in New York." Known for taking big risks in his career, the producer has two more projects lying up. "An acting school in Mumbai for budding talents and a studio on the lines Hollywood in Filmcity for film buffs and visitors is on the cards.

"I have planned things for the projects; the only hiccup is get the land," he states. Well, here’s wishing he moves his magic wand and creates many more rib ticklers. — S. S.

Julius & Jolly come to town with their new album Punjabis On The Floor

Julius & Jolly :Photo by Parvesh Chauhan

Their music is pure fun, dance and masti. Perhaps, that’s why they decided to change their band name from Sound Design to a more Indian Joshilay. Julius and Jolly, the voices behind the power-packed band, were in town on Friday with their latest album Punjabis on the floor, a heady mix of traditional Indian and western music (baseline, strings of Boney M Daddy Cool).

While Julius comes from Tamil Nadu, Jolly is a hardcore Punjabi. The duo shot to fame with their single Muniya re muniya, an out and out dancing number from their debut album in 2000. From singing ad jingles to performing, they sure have come a long way.

"Music is like food — sometimes you want Chinese, another time Indian tadka," says Julius. Explaining the gap of six years between their first album and the present one, the duo says they were caught up with projects. "We were working with international artist Snap for a popular track power of bhangra and several shows," tells Jolly, the lead vocalist.

Coming from a diverse cultures, are there any signs of conflict? "The only time an argument surfaces is when it comes to deciding between dosa and butter chicken," chuckles Jolly.

On a more serious note, Jolly grew up on a constant musical diet of filmy music while Julius was influenced by Beatles, Queen and Steve Wonder. "In the present scenario where the world is literally shrinking, tradition, technique and cross cultures go hand in hand," they say.

The duo who started singing cover versions feel now is the right time to experiment with original compositions. "That’s what gives the musician a real high," confesses Jolly, who sang Challa, his favourite Punjabi folk number, for the movie Lets Enjoy. Very soon the duo will be experimenting with the number in their next album.

"African chants, orchestration and strings is all what we plan to include in the track," articulates Julius, who was introduced in the commercial world by Loy of Shankar Ehsaan Loy fame at the age of 15. Though his first jingle was for Hero Honda in the early 80ss, the jingle for Nestle sung by Shankar Mahadevan and music arranged by him is what remains close to Julius’ heart. "I am a creative person — be it a jingle, song or ads, I do whatever stimulates me," claims Julius, who started singing with the Delhi campus rock band Blitzkreig.

On the bumpy road to Bollywood, this two of a kind clears the air. "It’s better to do your own thing (song or music) than to do some mediocre stuff in films." On the ever-growing popularity of Punjabi music, the duo says, "It’s the flavour of Punjabi music, its vibrancy that makes it a global choice." Well that’s the power of music!

BEAUTY STUDIO
Bye bye oily skin
Pammy Kaul

Everyone wants to have a flawless healthy-looking skin, free from mild, moderate or excessive oiliness, blackheads and spots. Oily skin is genetic, though stress and hormones play a major part as well. Also, everybody’s chemical makeup is different. Hormonal imbalance and increased production in the oil-producing glands in skin results in oily skin. What works for one may not be a success story for another person. All said and done oily skin remains a serious problem. Is there a best way to look after it? No one seems to have an answer!

Oiliness is also associated with humid environment. The best option to keep oily skin under control is by keeping the topmost layer of your skin free of debris and oil build-up by regular exfoliation. Taking excess oil and dead skin cells off, the epidermis helps open pores and allow the skin to breathe.

Your kitchen shelves can offer you the best to combat oiliness—beat egg white stiff and apply to your face and leave until dry. Squeeze the juice from a lemon and let it sit on your face for 5 minutes. Mud or clay masks are excellent for oil absorbency. Spread honey over your face, its moisturising properties will loosen the upper layer of debris. Rinse with warm water.

Q. I have an oily skin and it worsens in summers. What should I do?

A. The first step is, do not let excess oil sit on your face. Use an alcohol- free, mild astringent to remove excess oils. Never clean your face squeaky clean as skin that is too dry will try to compensate for the lack of moisture by producing more oil. Make it a routine to cleanse at least twice a day to help prevent clogged pores. Moisturising is not necessary on a daily basis, but treat your face with an oil-free moisturiser when it feels tight after wash. Go for oil-free products and make-up that is water based and non-comedogenic. A gel sunscreen (minimum of SPF15) that is not oil-based would prove to be a boon as it’s less greasy. If you have breakouts, use a cleanser with salicyclic acid to help exfoliate the pores. Clean your make up applicators every week to get rid off the oil on them.

Q. I am told exfoliation helps oily skin. Is that true?

A. Exfoliation is a major step in controlling oil build up and debris on the top layer of your skin. By adding exfoliation to your skin care regimen, you open pores and remove toxins from the skin’s surface, allowing the skin to breathe more naturally. This is important in alleviating oily skin. It will also help fine lines in becoming less visible and lend a healthy glow to your face. However, do not disturb the acid mantle by over stripping the skin and remember to stick to alcohol-free cleansers. When your skin is too dry, it tries to correct the moisture imbalance by creating more of its natural oils.

Do not overdo or be aggressive in exfoliating as it can result in broken capillaries. Exfoliating treatments that utilise citric juices, as ingredients are good for oily skin. Your massaging should consist of small circles, which overlap each other repeatedly. Seal the water by applying a good moisturiser for oily skin applied to wet/damp skin. This will help seal water into the outer layers of the skin, which can help balance the moisture content and allow your skin to slow its oil production.

First iPod virus

Kaspersky Lab has reportedly discovered the first virus designed to infect Apple Computer iPods. However, the company says the virus Podloso is a proof of concept programme that does not pose any real threat. Podloso is a file that can be launched and run on an iPod. The catch is that for Podloso to function, Linux needs to be installed on the iPod.

And, Podloso needs to be installed on the iPod by the user. Meaning: Podloso cannot be automatically launched without user involvement. Once launched, it scans the iPod’s hard disk, and infects all .elf format executable files. An attempt to launch these files causes Podloso to display a message on the screen saying: "You are infected with Oslo, the first iPodLinux."

Kaspersky describes Podloso as a typical proof of concept virus, created to demonstrate that it is possible to infect a specific platform. Podloso does not have a malicious payload, and is unable to spread on its own, as in - a user has to save the virus to the iPod for the device to get infected.

Some months back, there were reports of Apple having shipped iPods with a Windows virus dubbed RavMonE. RavMonE did not infect iPods, but could affect Windows PCs when connected to them... — TNRC

BIG PICTURE
Go easy on fat
Priya Gill

Prem SurHow can one prepare tempting, tasty, and mouth-watering Indian meals without fat? The answer is simple; just ask city-based Prem Sur.

Prem embarked upon ‘mission impossible’ in the world of Indian cuisine and came up with ideas on how to cook delicious, wholesome, and satisfying dishes without using oil, butter, or ghee.

"One does not need more than 15 grams (1 tablespoon) of fat per day. The use of excessive fat or the wrong kind of fat has been proved to be injurious to health at all stages of one’s life." In 1998, Prem even authored a book called Cook without Oil, Recipes to treat Obesity and Heart Ailment. The book is no longer in circulation, but Prem has offered up some of her fat-free culinary secrets to Lifestyle.

She advises to use herbs, but restrict the salt intake according to taste or health requirements. In curries, Prem replaces oil with water and says you should cook the onion, ginger, garlic, tomato, etc, in a little water to achieve a smooth texture. Keep adding 2 tablespoons of water until it is nicely cooked, she adds. For gravies, she mixes non-fat beaten curd or skim milk with the tomatoes and onions and then cooks the ingredients in water.

For desserts, use nonfat milk powder and skim milk. In her kulfi, Prem uses makhana seeds (puffed lotus seeds), which she soaks, cleans, and grinds into a paste to give it the smooth flavour and texture, instead of full cream milk.

Cakes are now very much incorporated into Indian food and you can use a fruit pulp from bananas or apples, etc to help make the texture smooth, instead of oil, fat, or butter, she says. "The texture will be slightly dry or rough, but quite edible." Prem also uses whole-meal atta instead of maida in her cakes.

Fat-free Matar Paneer

Ingredients
1 cup fresh green peas
½ cup nonfat paneer pieces (3/4 inch cubes)
¼ cup onion puree
2 tsp. tomato puree
½ tsp. ginger paste
¼ tsp garlic paste
2 tsp chopped coriander leaves
½ tsp. cumin
1 tsp. coriander powder.
¾ tsp. tumeric powder.
¼ tsp garam masala powder.
¾ cup water

Method

In a pressure cooker on medium heat, dry-roast cumin, then add coriander and tumeric powder and roast for two seconds more. Add onion puree, tomato puree and garlic-ginger pastes. Stir constantly and cook till the moisture evaporates.

Add peas, water and half of coriander leaves. Pressure cook on high heat for two minutes. Remove from heat. Allow the pressure cooker to cool naturally.

Open the pressure cooker and check if peas are cooked. Add paneer pieces and cook for two minutes. If the gravy is too thick, add a little hot water. Bring to a boil and remove from heat. Add garam masala powder and remaining coriander leaves while serving.

Meet the veggie smoothies
Kandla Nijhowne

A vegetable smoothie is a cross between a lassi and a jaljeera, where veggies put in the all-important guest appearance. The concept of carrot and beetroot juice is not alien to us in India so now imagine whipping in some yoghurt and spiking it with spices? Voila! You’re in the august company of a cooling, stabilising and calming Vegetable Smoothie! I’d rather have a fruit smoothie any day, but this way, if I can gulp down a handful of desirable vegetables in three seconds flat, then so be it! Here are some famous words—There are juice-bars and there are alcohol-bars. The only difference is that one detoxifies your liver and the other hardens it!

Tip of the Week

Be adventurous and experiment with a squirt of Tabasco or lemon juice, even Worchester sauce in your smoothie. Roasted, crushed jeera too, imparts a refreshing flavour. You may even choose to serve these drinks in wide bowls as a cold soup.

Beet Blaster

1 large beetroot, peeled and chopped
½ red pimento, chopped
1 medium carrot, scraped
1 ½ tsp fresh ginger juice
½ apple, peeled and cored
1 cup pomegranate juice
Salt and pepper

Method
Whip together
all chopped ingredients in the blender. Add salt and pepper and ice-cubes and give it another quick twirl.

Pour into glasses and serve garnished with a sliver of pimento.

Carrot Cocktail

3 medium carrots, scraped

1 small cucumber, peeled

2 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed

A few sprigs of cilantro (dhania leaves)

1 tbsp minced onion (optional)

1 cup yoghurt or apple juice

Method

Chop the carrots, cucumber and dhania and place in the liquidiser along with the garlic, onion, yoghurt and seasoning. Add a few ice-cubes and blend till you have a smooth consistency. Check seasoning and serve in a tall glass with a wide straw.

Green Goddess

1 cup yoghurt
2 ribs of celery
A handful of spinach
½ cucumber, peeled
1 medium sized tomato
100 gm broccoli florets
1 tbsp grated ginger

Method

Chop all the veggies and tip into a liquidiser with the yoghurt, ginger and seasoning. Run the blender after adding a few ice-cubes. Pour into glasses and top with a pinch of powdered cinnamon for that five-star aroma.
