Experts dwell on risks in pregnancy

Chandigarh, April 8
“There was no clinical test to predict the occurrence of pre-eclampsia. However, a combination of maternal high-risk factors with uterine artery doppler can prove useful. Also, calcium intake can prevent pre-eclampsia in high-risk women with low dietary intake,” said Dr P.K. Saha at a CME and annual meeting of the Obstetric and Gynaecological Society of Northern India at the PGIMER today.

Over 150 delegates participated and deliberated on issues pertaining to obstetric haemorrhage and eclampsia.

Dr Shalini underlined the need for taking fetal growth into consideration while attempting to reduce blood pressure, especially in cases of pregnancy-induced hypertension.

Dr P.R. Handa opined that protocols and guidelines should be made for management of severe pre-eclampsia, depending upon the facilities of neonatal and maternal intensive care at each centre.

A panel discussion on obstetric haemorrhage was held in which experts, including Sushma Chawla, Anju Huria, Kumud Gupta, Manjit Mohi, Lakhbir Dhaliwal, deliberated on different aspects of bleeding complications arising out of pregnancy and their effective management in order to prevent maternal deaths. — TNS
