Alcohol consumers in Kerala have formed an association having a membership of 68,000 people across the state. They are asking that liquor should be made available through ration shops and bar homes where people can have a drink without being harassed by the police. A couple of months ago when we had launched our Sharabi Dal in Amritsar, we had declared that if we came to power, we would make sharab di bhattis in every village and 50 per cent of the profit would go to the police Inspector in charge of the area. We had also demanded that the authorities allow distribution of liquor from door to door just as the milkmen distribute milk. Consumers would soon be heard saying ‘Arre sharabwale bhaiya, sharab mein pani kam milaya karo’. The only difference is that while we were spoofing on the menace of drugs and alcohol in Punjab, the association in Kerala seems serious about promoting the consumption booze in the state. The All-Kerala Liquor Consumer’s Welfare Association is against dry days and demands crackdown on adulteration of liquor whereas our Amritsar Sharabi Dal stressed on training drunkards so that they could digest any kind of adulterated liquor without a hangover. It is high time that an inter-state drinking competition is organised. If in times to come, a world cup in drinking is launched, I am sure the captain of Team India would be either from Punjab or Kerala.
