Captured in frames: The picturesque city of Srinagar on the banks of the Jhelum

Capturing the old city of Srinagar in frames, Afaq Rasool Gadda brought some nostalgic moments for Kashmiri migrants at the Kala Kendra in Jammu, where he recently held a photo exhibition.

Several of his frames depict the temples and mosques dotting the old city of Srinagar along the Jhelum river.

An open window of an old house, with darkness inside, tells the story of people and their unknown fate, amidst the turbulence in the last 17 years or so, while another frame attracted a middle-aged woman, who pointed to her husband the lane where she spent her childhood, before the gradual mass exodus.

"This is the first mosque built in Srinagar," explains Afaq, pointing to the Bul Bul Shah mosque, built in the early 14th century during the reign of King Sahadeva, on the banks of Jhelum. Bul Bul Shah was a Sufi saint.

Afaq, who holds the credit of making documentaries on Kashmir for Doordarshan and other media networks, is also coming out with a book on the architecture of Kashmir.

Several old houses, inhabited by Kashmiris, still hold the architectural heritage of Srinagar, maintains Afaq, adding that he would like to capture the ruins before they too disappear.

"Even when the heaven is turning into hell (because of insurgency), creativity never dies here (in the valley)," he says, hiding his emotions in a smile.
