It’s all in the air," feels the 19-year-old Jiah Khan, when asked about Amitabh Bachchan’s presence during the shooting of Nishabd. And the hottest new entrant in Bollywood wanted all to take this statement quite literally. Because, according to Jiah (who was earlier working with a perfume factory), she can smell the Big B coming in from a distance. Not to stop at this, Jiah also feels that Amitabh Bachchan is one of the best-smelling males she has come across on the terra firma. Now whether that’s another feather in the cap for the Big B or not, is something up to you to decide, but there is no denying the fact that Bachchan has opened a completely new chapter in his acting career with his Sugar Daddy roles in Nishabd and to an extent, KANK. Srabanti Chakrabarty spoke to the living legend, who cane to the music launch party of Nishabd dressed in a jackboot, knickers and a white embroidered kurta. It’s an interesting
outfit you are wearing today. Any specific reason? Nishabd is a very different film—and a bold one at that. How did RGV convince you to do this role? It took Ramu barely a few minutes to convince me to do this film. We were discussing Gabbar’s new look in Sholay when he told me about the new film he was thinking about. He narrated the storyline to me and I was sold immediately. I asked him when could we start shooting. And everything happened really fast. We travelled to Munnar in Kerala for the shoot and had a start-to-finish schedule through 24 days. And before we knew, the film was ready. It was a great experience and I hope we have similar start-to-finish shooting schedules for all films we do. As an actor, it helps us a lot. You have never played a role like this before... (cuts the question short) I have never played a role like this before because I did not turn 65 before. Let’s shift to something else. How was the experience working with a newcomer like Jiah Khan? It was a great experience. And, let me tell you, it was not Jiah who was nervous; it was I who was nervous while acting with her. She is an extremely capable actress and while working with her, I never felt that this was her first movie. She is confident of what she does and was a good person to work with. Tell us something about the movie. In my opinion, this is Ramu’s most sensitive story about human relationships till date. He has always been known for experimenting with new forms, but this one breaks all barriers. Nishabd is a story of a 60-year-old man who lives happily with his wife and daughter. His daughter’s best friend comes to spend her holidays with them and falls in love with him. The story deals with the emotions that lead to the young girl falling in love with an old man and what happens thereafter. How the otherwise happy family deals with the situation is portrayed beautifully. The beauty of the movie lies in the way the story has been narrated. It’s not about sex, it is not about seduction, it is about genuine emotions. But the entire promotion campaign of Nishabd is about seduction and physical attraction. The way Jiah Khan looks in the promos does lead to the conclusion that the film has loads of physically intimate scenes. The promos have been prepared to develop Jiah’s character in the movie—a wild, young, bold and free-flowing teenager. The film is not about physical love—it deals with love at the mental level. Do not judge this film by the visuals you see in the promos. There is a lot more to it. But do you think such incidents happen in real life? I wouldn’t say that they happen every now and then, but yes such incidents do happen. Just the other day I read in a newspaper about a 60-plus person falling in love with a girl half his age and this leading to an altercation with his wife and the girl. So such incidents do happen. But yes, it does not come out in the open very often. At the same time, you must also consider the fact that the film is Ramu’s take on what happens in a sensitive situation like this and everything may not relate to a real-life situation.
