Punjab—the very name once conjured up a land of flowing milk and butter. Today the same Punjab is the land of flowing liquor and drugs. Consumption of liquor is at a new high. In this scenario, it is not possible for sharabis to consume it neat  after all you require water. That is why Capt Amarinder Singh has done a commendable job in not letting the river waters go out of Punjab.

With this move, the sharabis are happier than the farmers. But only those who have their drink with water were happy with the decision. Those who have it neat or with soda couldn’t care less about the river waters dispute.

With the elections on, many candidates have declared that during election time they would keep away from drinking. And in whichever areas these bold declarations have been made, the sharabis and drug dealers have slowly started trickling out of these constituencies. I fear that these constituencies might see a voter turnout of only 10-15 per cent (probably the votes of happy housewives).

Sometimes in these polling days, if the owner of a sharab di bhatti wants to suspend the operations, the Inspector in charge of the area won’t let him do so. After all the policewalla has also got to keep his political godfathers happy.

A God-fearing simple man who didn’t touch liquor at all suddenly started drinking during the elections. His surprised friend asked him the reason. The man replied, "Looking at the character of the candidates, if I remain in my senses I will not be able to vote for anyone."
