Designs on furniture Corbusier’s furniture was way ahead of his time, as
Parbina Rashid discovers
In the final year of geography masters at Jamia Millia Islamia we were asked to study the master plans of any two planned cities of the country. The first choice between Delhi, Chandigarh and Bangalore, for the entire class was not a difficult one – Corbusier’s Chandigarh. Not that we had developed a sudden fascination for squares and boxes, but its master plan was the easiest to memorise. That was my first introduction to Le Corbusier’s most-talked about creation. But the true fascination for the city began once I homed in. And when the other day I chanced upon a chaise-lounge designed by the master architect, I wanted to know him more — this time as the designer of furniture. This chair designed in 1928 by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perrianel, can still give any modern day furnishing house a run for its money. And that’s how the hunt to track down Corbusier’s furniture began. “This was a gift from the Cassina I Maestri, a furnishing house in France which has exclusive rights for reproducing Le Corbusier’s designs,” tells Reggie Walia, cultural coordinator of Alliance Francaise de Chandigarh. “This chair is our pride and joy and now a permanent exhibit here,” she says. The sleek lounge in black leather with a matching headrest, kept in the Director’s room, almost tempted me to stretch on it and get a feel! Though not too many people in the city can boasts of an original Le Corbusier piece, except for perhaps Bruno Plasse, the Director of Alliance Francaise, who has a Cassina-reproduced Corbusier table, there are a few diehard admirers of Corbusier who have preserved anything that was even remotely connected to the architect.
One such family is that of the late B.P. Mathur. His son Tarun and daughter-in-law Ameeta Mathur proudly display a table inspired by Corbusier and designed by Mathur Sr. in their Sector 8 home. Also in their collection, is a replica of the chaise-lounge at Alliance Francaise by Tarun’s brother Kunal. “Though the table was designed by my father, Corbusier provided the inspiration,” says Tarun. So popular are these two pieces that the Mathur House gets scores of visitors! Tarun’s house too radiates a strong Corbusier presence — straight lines, French windows and concealed lights. “Corbusier had visited the site when my father was building it,” says Tarun, recalling the man he had met when he was barely four. “I do not remember the interaction. For one, I was too young to speak English and then he was not the kind of man a child would cling to as uncle!” he recalls. “He might have been the aloof kind, but for us living in his city, he is part of our lives,” says Aditya Prakash, former principal of the College of Art, who worked in close association with Le Corbusier. So we ask Aditya Prakash to tell us about the designer side of the man. “Corbusier did not do much furniture designing for the city and never for any private collector,” says Prakash. “And with whatever little furniture Corbusier designed for the Assembly, Secretariat and the High Court fast disappearing, we might have to see his works in the Cassina catalogue in the future,” says Professor Kiran Joshi of the Chandigarh College of Architecture. |

PECfest is bigger than ever Excitement fills the air, faces shine with enthusiasm, attendance of students is cent per cent — after all they have been waiting for this day to come for a whole year! The campus just looked like one perfect Masti ki
pathsahala. This is that time of the year when almost all colleges in the city are a buzz with activities more than usual. Techies are at it yet again. No references to the approaching examination. No prizes for any guesses. It’s the much-awaited PECfest that has gripped students all around the city. A visit to the campus revealed what does the fest means to the students. No books to be seen around and empty corridors. And don’t mistake this show as just any other event, for when it comes to enjoyment and chilling out, one of the brainiest students that the PECians are, know well how to reach out for fun and
maza. Lets get rolling with the fest punch line – Go Sira. (Sira, the squirrel, is the mascot for the fest) Kalpana Ki
Udaan
Kalpana Ki Udaan: Romance with the Skie s marked the beginning of
PECfest, the three-day annual fiesta. While the technical sessions Eclectia and Pentathlon were going on inside, it was the activities outside that were catching everyone’s fancy. If it was Treasure Hunt that made all the enthusiastic participants do the running around the campus looking for clues first then the powerful performances in street play competition by four teams, two from Delhi and two from the city, left the massive audience asking for more. It was a superb performance, Hai Ki Nahi by the winning team of DAV College Sector 10, at the IIT fest, Mumbai, that got the loudest applause. Lined up with stalls of the sponsors and others, the entire stall area looked like one big shopping arcade. While some of the students were busy digging into the yummy grub, few others were busy enjoying Tekken 4 on Play Station 2 and still quite a few grooved to the tunes of the DJ who was busy belting out latest hip-hop numbers. While the organisers spotted wearing official t-shirts with the phrase reaching out loud to the onlookers, ‘If it doesn’t give you a high, why do it?’ were busy making arrangements on the walky-talkies, about 120 students were busy finding a place to sit in the auditorium for a Geo quiz on Geography, sponsored by National Geographic. Stress busters, a quiz based on IQ including group discussions on the burning topics, Salsa sessions and
go-karting will be held on all three days. With more than 750 registrations already done online and still continuing, fest is going be bigger, more Hip n’ Happening during the next two days. |
Soup up! Sprigs of rosemary, flakes of chilli and dusty-black peppercorns all muddled up with tomatoes and simmered on a slow flame. Just as the broth bubbles up ladle it into your waiting cup. Wrap your fingers around it, take a slurp and feel the warmth deliciously curl right down to your toes. Yes home-cooked potages are great, but how that nondescript soup in some of its more appealing avatars? For that ‘larger-than-life’ option, the Mizutaki Family Soup it is! Lots of vegetables and chicken bring up this honest-to-goodness broth at Chopsticks 2 in Sector 7 on Madhya Marg. This Chinese eatery believes in welcoming the whole family, so the Mizutaki serves up to 8 to 10 people from one single bowl! For a slice of the exotic orient, there is the Oriental Lounge in Sector 34 where Thai rules the roost. Tom Kha, delightfully mild, heavy on the lemon grass and cooked in coconut milk, is the perfect foil to the brash and fiery red Tom Yum. Of course there is also the Mandarin Clear Wanton Soup for that Indian-palate-craving-Chinese influence! To satiate that ‘contemporary’ swing to your taste buds, wander into Café 17 at the Taj Chandigarh in Sector 17. Executive Chef A. N. Mishra specialises in rustling up healthy soups for those, “who have not time to eat vegetables.” Red Pepper and Broccoli Soup shake a leg with Vegetable and Barley Soup flavoured with bay leaves and cinnamon sticks. After all, health is wealth! For a more decadent evening stop over at the very-British Colonial Indian Dak Bungalow at Whispering Willows, Zirakpur. Here the soups are served in a cup and saucer no less — very propah! Order the Pish Pash if the essence of an Army mess is what you crave, “a classic broth of meat and rice” explains owner Priya Jagat. Or then there is the Dak Bungalow Chicken Clear Soup, an in-house speciality with a secret recipe — yum! There is the ubiquitous tomato soup as well, but wait, not one of them canteen options in a plastic cup. This one comes with saffron cream. If a shorba is what you desire, then the Khumb Badam Shorba is the perfect pick. “Shorbas are also the ‘hot’ selection at super chef Sanjeev Kapoor’s ‘Yellow Chilli’ in Panchkula where the flavours are hand picked right out the heart of Indian cuisine,” says one frequent eater there. Finally for a continental appeal there is the Bedouin Lounge at Whispering Willows, just above Dak Bungalow. A “classic selection from the Mediterranean region” is what they offer and sitting plump on the menu is the Moroccan Harira, Moroccan lamb and chick pea broth cooked over a slow flame with tomatoes and fresh coriander leaves, the Fish Soup with Brandy — the Sopa De Pescado — and the Lebanese Spring Vegetable Soup with bean, peas and asparagus. But wait, just like there is always a twist in a good tale, there could be that unusual taste bud that might crave for a cold soup in cold weather. So do dunk your spoon into the Spanish Sal Morejo, a chilled vegetable soup served with ham, if icy is your mantra for a cold winter day! Soupy scraps
The word soup originates from the Teutonic word suppa, which refers to a medieval dish consisting of a thick stew poured on slices of bread, called sop, used to soak up the liquid. Often described as potages, French onion soup is an example of a modern soup that retains this bread sop. The humble soup has also given birth to several phrases in the English language and some of them having nothing really to do with soups! Alphabet soup is a term often used to describe a large amount of acronyms used by an administration and has its roots in a common tomato-based soup containing pasta shaped in the letters of the alphabet. Primordial soup is a term used to describe the organic mixture leading to the development of life. A soup kitchen is a place that serves prepared food of any kind to the homeless. Pea soup describes a thick or dense fog while Stone soup is a popular children’s fable and Duck soup is a term to describe a task that is particularly easy. What is more, soup has also found its way into popular culture. While Andy Warhol is well known for his signature cans of Campbell Soup, ‘the Soup Nazi’ made his mark as one of popular television series ‘Seinfeld’s, most memorable characters in one of its episodes. Take the citrus route
Orange, lime, lemon, tangerine, all these vibrant colours are so apt, so evocative of the fruits they’re named after. They themselves radiate sunny warmth, inviting you to partake of their tangy burst of sweetness (all, except the lemons, I daresay!) We are all aware of the benefits of the citrus family, with their abundance of Vitamin C in the form of pectin. The Vitamin C (Ascorbic and Folic acids) can reduce the levels of artery-blocking bad cholesterol in the blood. Pectin also inhibits cancer growth, especially that of the prostrate gland. The fruit is also beneficial to bone-health, known to prevent osteoporosis. We should eat up the thready fibers adhering to each segment instead of peeling them off, but don’t preach about this, when in a group! I once did, (at a wedding) as a teenaged Little-Miss-Know-All, and my older cousins gathered EVERYONES fibrous scraps and ordered me to eat them, since I’d said they provide roughage! Of course I didn’t, but nevertheless, it left a bad taste in the mouth! The word ‘orange’ originates from Sanskrit, from the word ‘naarang’, meaning fragrant. So the naarangis (and the Narangs!) of the world, rejoice! Orange Pound Cake
All pound cake recipes have their ingredients in pounds but I have converted this one to grams for convenience. Of course you may divide all quantities by two and choose to do a cake, using three eggs instead of six. Do not attempt this cake if you don’t have an electric beater for the tiresome
whipping, or a very, very strong pair of wrists! Ingredients 455 gm butter 455 gm sugar powder 2 tbsp grated orange rind 6 eggs 3 ½ cups flour 4 level tsp baking powder ¼ tsp salt ¼ cup orange juice ¾ cup marmalade ½ cup thinly sliced orange pieces (outer skin included) Method Pre-heat oven at 350º C. Beat the butter, sugar and rind till pale and fluffy. Add pre-beaten eggs, a little at a time. Sift the flour, baking powder and salt together and gradually fold into the creamed mixture along with the juice. Bake for 50 minutes to an hour, till golden and springy to touch. Cool for 5-10 minutes and brush with the jam, finally topping the surface with the orange slices.
Citrus, Grapes & Greens Salad
Ingredients 4 kinnows 1 cup purple grapes ¼ bunch tender spinach leaves ¼ cup sliced onion 2 ½ tbsp olive oil 1 tsp
rosemary (dried) Finely ground rock salt (kaala namak) A handful of walnut
bits (optional) Method Squeeze the juice from one kinnow and mix it with the olive oil, rock salt, rosemary and pepper. Keep aside. Peel the other 3 kinnows and chop into small sections. Keep spinach leaves whole if they are small, or tear into bite-sized pieces. In a large bowl, combine the kinnow pieces, spinach, onion, grapes and walnuts. A little before you want to serve the salad, pour the dressing over it and toss gently to combine. At this stage, check the seasoning and add more salt or pepper if necessary. Transfer to an attractive bowl and keep chilled till needed. |
Delightfully French Croissant, named for its distinctive crescent shape, which once served as breakfast of Frenchmen, is now satiating almost everyone’s desire for patisserie foodstuff. Remember the last time you visited a bakery and noticed a turtle shaped bun with layers, lying on a shelf, having a shining top surface? Well, in reality, a lot goes into the making of the base of this otherwise tantalising croissant. This butter laden flaky French pastry is made by layering yeast dough with butter and rolling and folding a few times in succession. Lets take a quick look at some of the popular bakeries in the city offering these yummy croissants. At Cakes ‘n’ Stuff in Sector 8, Croissants are selling like hot cakes. Generally known as a bread-cum-puff due to its filling, croissants were introduced three years back and are available with almost all the fillings, informs Sanjeev, owner of Cakes ‘n’ Stuff. So the vegetarians can take their pick from Paneer, mushrooms and cheese, whereas for the non-vegetarians, croissants are available with a rich filling of chicken. And for those with a sweet tooth, on a special order, croissants can also be filled up with chocolate. And if you happen to be calorie conscious, Nik Baker in Sector 9 has a solution. Apart from plain, chicken, cheese, vegetarian and others, bases made out of whole wheat are also used to bake croissants to keep that thin waistline intact. Nikhil, the brainchild behind the Nik Bakers shares with us, some of the best combinations for having croissants. “A freshly baked croissant makes a wonderful combination with a hot cup of Cappuccino or even a sandwich for breakfast,” says Nikhil. At Oven Fresh in Sector 35 and 17, croissants are next hot favourites after their grilled sandwiches. One can gorge on the regular croissants such as the ones stuffed with sautéd French beans, mushroom, shredded chicken with herbs, mutton keema or the one having cheese paprika (processed cheese with red chilli powder) stuffing. Interestingly, there is a technique involved in distinguishing different croissants, informs Manoj, Manager, Oven Fresh, Sector 35, “Since the shape of all croissants having different filling is the same so we garnish them in a different way”. So the ones with cumin seeds on the top are vegetarian, ones without any garnishing are mushroom ones, cheese paprika croissants have a spot of cheese on the top layer and the ones with white sesame seeds are mutton croissants. Well, that trick seems to be working well. So go ahead and enjoy your breakfast - French style! |
Dazzling rose
sandwiches When a carload of guests land up suddenly, you can delight them with special dishes using roses! Try this delicious rose sandwich. Cut the flowers of your favourite colour, when they are nearly open. Take the most fragrant petals, chop and mash them into a batter for your special sandwiches. You can even put rose petals in your cake batter. Rose petals make a lovely and tasty sandwich filling and can also be put into a salad. To make crystallised rose petals for cakes and desserts, lightly beat egg white and coat rose petals and leaves. Use a small paintbrush, or if dipping into egg white, take care not to over do it. Dust lightly with caster sugar and lay them on to waxed paper on biscuit trays. Sun dry them or dry them in a cool oven. Wait till they are crisp, then lift off the paper and store in an airtight container. Rose-petal preserve
If your guests bring you scented and brightly coloured roses you can use them to make this delicious preserve. Or you can buy your own scented roses. You will need
50 gm red or pink rose petals 250 gm sugar 50 ml water One tablespoon lemon juice One tablespoon orange juice Cochineal (optional) Clear away the leafy parts from your roses and cut away the white or yellow part at the base of the petals. Wash and drain them. Mix the sugar, water, orange and lemon juice and bring them to a boil to make syrup. Add the rose petals and simmer over very low heat, stir it all the time. Let it cook for about 30 minutes, or till you find it has become thick. Now add a few drops of red cochineal if you want a deeper colour. Now your rose preserve is ready to pot into small lovely jars or even pretty little glass bottles you may be having in the kitchen. Brush the insides with a little glycerine. You can use the rose preserve to brush over ice cream, trifles and puddings! |

The sound of fame
The rhythmic notes of fame are just a soundtrack away for jitterbugs. They now stand a chance of playing live in five cities across the country with “happening” and “ internationally acclaimed” disc jockeys (DJs) by recreating their own versions of tracks. Ik Chadar Maili Si vows London
Ik Chadar Maili Si
has now premiered in the UK, thanks to Indian-born director Sneh Lata Verma. A Sheet Soiled and Torn in English, the play has been adapted from the one written by the award-winning writer, the late Rajinder Singh Bedi, in the ‘60s and is set in a rural Punjabi village. It tells the story of Rano who is pressurised by the village elders to marry her brother-in-law after her first husband is murdered. The play explores the dilemmas and anguish of Rano as she is forced into the most difficult of choices for the sake of her family.
The actor playing the part of the brother-in-law, Raj Verma, said: “The play explores sexuality, society and relationships with honesty and intensity, engaging audiences emotionally and intellectually”. He also told The Asian Times: “The play is based on a classic Urdu novella which is a landmark in Punjabi literature. Rajinder Singh Bedi is an icon in India and what is interesting is that the old-fashioned traditions shown in this play are not judged - the audience is left to make up their own mind.” The play was actually performed in Punjabi when it was staged in London last month and director Sneh Lata Verma explained that this decision meant that not only was there an added air of truth to the piece, but that also the older generation of Punjabis would thereby relate to the themes in the play and the younger generation would appreciate learning about their ancestry. As Verma pointed out: “It’s important to demonstrate that Punjabi culture is about more than bhangra music”. Never a truer word...

Hard-hitting, well made
Black Friday will leave you stunned. It is one of the most amazing, hard-hitting movies of its time. A bold story, perfect execution and strong performances by the lead stars will sweep you off your feet. The film is a cinematic narrative of investigations and events that unraveled the heinous conspiracy behind the 1993 Mumbai blasts. The film tracks down the conspiracy and the conspirators, the people who engineered the heinous crime. Black Friday has a terrific screenplay. The ever-dependable Kay Kay Menon comes up with a great performance. The film belongs to him. Pawan Malhotra is also splendid. So are Aditya Srivastava, Zakir Hussain, Pankaj Jha and Pratima Kazmi. Director Anurag Kashyap has been courageous in undertaking a dark theme and handling it with aplomb. He proves he is a good filmmaker. The cinematography is first-rate and its background score is another highlight. Blast scenes directed by action director Sham Kaushal are excellent. The tracks composed by Indian Ocean are targeted at those select few who crave for something different. The Kenny G-inspired instrumental Memon House is a treat for the ears. Black Friday can easily be labeled one of the better products churned out in Bollywood. Hats off to Anurag Kashyap. Definitely a worth watch. Catch it at Fun Republic, Manimajra. — DP |
YOUTH SPEAK
Cricket in India is more of a passion now than a sport. Millions of Indians watch the game with great enthusiasm. As usual, they sat glued to their TV sets when during the recent Mini World Cup. If the players don’t deliver, it hurts the sentiments of millions of their countrymen. In my opinion, the consistently poor performance of Indian cricket players can be attributed to their extensive involvement in the advertising world rather than concentrating on the game. Featuring in advertisements, no doubt, makes players rich, but they must not do it at the cost of the game that makes them celebrities in the first place. One of the remedies can be that the BCCI puts a ban on players endorsing products. If the players’ performance continues to be indifferent, cricket buffs may retaliate and boycott the products they endorse. Another reason for non-performance of players, I feel, is biased selection. Selectors choose undeserving players sometimes under political pressure. We also lag in hunting for new talent at the grassroot level and giving good exposure to the budding players so that they learn how not to succumb under pressure. India with a flourishing economy can afford to have world-class pitches and grounds and equipment. — Gautam Sharma |

Wear skirts Hillary!
Fashion mogul Donatella Versace has some valuable style tips for America’s presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. The Italian designer feels that Mrs Clinton needs to feminise her look with skirts and dresses instead of serious-looking pantsuits. Donatella Versace told a German newspaper: “I can understand (trousers) are comfortable but she’s a woman and she is allowed to show that. She should treat femininity as an opportunity and not try to emulate masculinity in politics.” Versace believes Bill Clinton’s beautiful wife’s signature look should consist of knee-length skirts with a short jacket in chic black, instead of her usual granny blue. Even though Donatella criticised Clinton on her stylistically challenged sense of dressing, she did momentarily retract her claws, adding, “I admire her for her determination, which will hopefully take her to the White House.” — ANI Blues for Hugh

My prayers and thoughts are with her friends and loved ones,” he was quoted as saying.
Diaz’s $3m
pay cheque
Actress Cameron Diaz has reportedly received a whopping 3 million dollar cheque for endorsing a Japanese cell phone brand in a commercial. In the ad that was filmed in Los Angeles in January, the Charlie’s Angels star wore a blonde wig and a green dress. She talks on her mobile and is so absorbed in the conversation that she does not realise that a film with aliens, pirates, cowboys and mobsters, ‘is being filmed around her’! An insider said that throughout the six-hour shoot for the commercial, which will be shown only in Japan, the actress was continuously smiling and that she seemed like a ‘knockout’.
