Writer-director-producer Suneel Darshan has a reputation for making movies that have high emotional content. Most of his flicks generally dwell upon relationships. For example, Jaanwar was melodramatic, Talaash was full of passion and Ek Rishta dealt with generation gap. Perhaps, the movie that could have brought him laurels as director was Mere Jeevan Saathi had its release not got overly delayed. It was upstaged by Aitraaz that had a similar plot. Oddly, both had the same leading male star – Akshay Kumar.

Now Suneel Darshan has shifted the focus away from his tried and tested genre, viz., melodrama, and tried his hand at light entertainer that is designed to appeal to younger generations. Thus, he has come up with Shaka Laka Boom Boom – a flick for today’s youth. Starring Bobby Deol, Upen Patel, Celina Jaitly and Kangana Ranaut it is a story of four members of a band that performs in India and abroad. Now, we have seen musicals before. There was the Mithun starrer Disco Dancer and then there was Karz starring Rishi Kapoor – the former a rags to riches story of the protagonist and the latter an out and out thriller based on reincarnation. Of course one can say that almost all Hindi movies are musicals in the sense that they have song and dance sequences galore. So, how far has this movie’s maker succeeded in eschewing cinematic clich`E9s and stereotypes? In a telephonic chat Suneel Darshan clarified that SLB2 is neither a rags to riches story nor a paranormal hair-raiser. It is about four young people who get caught in relationship related problems. Sounds a bit like Jhankaar Beats? Hardly.

JB was more or less an ode to RD Burman with a bit of marital melodrama thrown in. The trio in JB sings Burman’s compositions whereas in SLB2 the music is original and more contemporary, which caters to the with-it youth. Moreover, the former was shot in Mumbai whereas Suneel Darshan has shot a substantial part of his movie in exotic locations in South Africa and USA. The sheer scenic beauty promises to sweep you off your feet, and the songs are going to zonk the youngsters like never before. Suneel Darshan signs off with a promise of high caliber performance by his cast especially by Sunny Deol.
