Word of wisdom

Jaspal Bhatti

NEW Jersey in the US is considering deleting the word ‘idiot’ from its constitution. My first reaction was that they were doing it probably to honour President Bush because he has been called a great ‘idiot’ for his handling of the Iraq crisis. However, I learnt that the move was to include people with mental disabilities in the voting process.

I have great respect for the word ‘idiot’. When we produced our first Punjabi feature film, Mahaul Theek Hai, we distributed it under the banner of Idiot Films. There is an Idiot Club in Amritsar, which recently rang in the New Year in a crematorium wanting to bring home the point that there are no ghosts. The Idiot’s Guide series is a famous publication with books written on various serious subjects.

As far as I can think, every intelligent person has a level of inherent idiocy in him or her, which helps him or her to survive in this topsy-turvy world. For example, if we give a serious thought to some of our electoral candidates we might never be tempted to vote. That’s the reason why some political parties distribute liquor and money among voters so that their levels of idiocy are substantially raised.

One such idiot asked another, "How long do you think does an MP or an MLA serve?" The other idiot replied, "Until he is caught taking bribes in a sting operation."
