Substitute computer teachers on war path
Chandigarh, December 28 The Chandigarh Police took a delegation of the protesters to the officer of Punjab Chief Minister, but the protesters stated that the effort was a futile one, as nothing substantial has come out of it. The protesting unemployed youths from various parts of the state, who were earlier working as computer teachers on daily wages, had launched an agitation after the state government, by its order on December 23, discontinued their services. They maintained that they had been working for over eight months in school and instead of giving them jobs on contractual basis the government had employed fresh teachers. They threatened to intensify their stir if their demands were not fulfilled. |

India a success story for world, says Prof
Chandigarh, December 28 “India has proved to the world that an economy so big can also show unprecedented growth rate. Also important is to notice that the rate of the growth has been very stable,” he said. Stating that the critics of the Nehru era had not been able to appreciate Nehru's contribution to the nation, Prof Ajit Singh pointed out that it was due to his efforts that the country was making a mark internationally in science and technology. “The legacy of Nehru took time to realise. His critics do not take into account the 10 years of severe shocks the economy went through from 1965 to 1975. The country saw two wars and draught, but at the end of the day the growth rate continued to rise,” he said. “The education system has contributed to the Indian success story. It is by accident and not by design that the system has come to focus on higher education and both the pubic and private sectors are playing a role. We now have world class institutions and the quality of education being given is high and as compared to the west it is quite economical,” he said. When asked about the state of primary and secondary education, Prof Ajit Singh said: “Now that we have a foothold on higher education, we could use the idealism of the graduates to teach others not so much for economic reasons but for the sake of democracy and empowerment that comes only with education,” he said. Reiterating that the Indian economy was doing well, specially in terms of manufacturing and services, Prof Ajit Singh, however, cautioned that there was a need to worry about the state of the Indian agriculture. “Agriculture remains a problem area within the country and solution will differ from state to state,” he said adding that in Punjab the solution might lie in looking at the global market for the agriculture produce. “In Punjab, diversification of crops might just be the best bet but only when markets are found. Here, I think the role of the entrepreneurs, especially retailers, can be important. What Walmart did to USA is what is being expected from Reliance now. In fact, the Indian retailer need to do better,” he said. He added that agriculture was responsible for large-scale disguised unemployment. “Till we divert people from agriculture to the manufacturing and services side, there are bound to be problems,” he said. |

Play relives Tughlaq’s era
Chandigarh, December 28 The 14th century ambience of the Moghul splendour greets one on entering the theatre which speaks volumes about the concept, planning , technical virtuosity and directorial elegance of the designer director Dr Mahendra, the spirit behind the grand annual production of the department. The historical play was immaculately structured to depict the veritable contrast between the myriad vices and virtues of the idealist Sultan, Mohammad Bin Tughlaq, and his self proclaimed oriental wisdom. The actors not only brought alive the Sultan's intellectual persona but also his treacherous approach, impatience and cruel nature through various sequences. The audience evinced keen interest as the play bared the life style and governance pattern of the exceptionally 'wise -foolish king' in the world history which adversely affected the socio political life in that era. Employing the announcers, the controversial issues of introducing brass or copper currency at par with silver and shifting of capital from Delhi to Daultabad were well illustrated. The sequences of strategic planning sessions in ‘Durbar’ with sultan's step mother, visionary Barni, Amir Shahab-ud-din, Nazib, Rattan Singh and 'prayer' by the Sultan were brilliantly enacted. As the history repeats itself the theme holds contemporary relevance even today. Brilliant performances came from Deepak Rawat, Gunjan Utreja, Parmod Kumar, Sunil Sharma, Ashu Sharma, sumit and D.Pawar and Reena Kaushish. Earlier the Vice-Chancellor, Professor R.C. Sobti, inaugurated the play. He complimented the director for bringing alive 'Tughlaq'. |

Panchkula, December 28 Having come up just next to the Azad Colony, these jhuggis were removed after prior notice was given to the residents.
