'Umang-2006' catches up with audience

Ludhiana, December 23
The Gujranwala Guru Nanak Institute of Vocational Studies organised 'Umang 2006' in the Guru Nanak Hall here today.

Mr Harmohinder Singh, joint secretary, Khalsa Educational Council, was the chief guest and Mr Kuljit Singh, assistant secretary, Khalsa Educational Council, was the guest of honour at the annual function. Mr Kuldip Singh, Director, and Mr Manjit Singh Chhabra, coordinator, GGNIVS, welcomed the guests and apprised the audience of the activities and future plans.

The function began with the lamp lighting ceremony by the chief guest followed by singing of 'Deh Shiva Var Mohe Ahae'. A slide presentation of the activities at the GGNIVS was shown to the audience.

The attraction of the function was ‘Walk in Style’, a fashion show, in which 40 students competed for the title of Miss and Master GGNIVS, Miss and Master ‘Well Dressed’. The judges for the titles were Dr P.S. Sethi, Director, Sethi Study Circle, and Ms Sweety.

Schools rock to Christmas celebrations

Ludhiana, December 23
Christmas was celebrated at Dil's Nursery School, Model Town Extension with fervour and enthusiasm. Children came dressed up as Santa Claus, Mother Mary and fairies. Xmas tree was decorated with bells and stars. Similar functions were held at Bon Voyage Vidya Bhawan, Jamalpur, Spring Dale Senior Secondary Public School, Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, BRS Nagar, and Kids Zone Playway School, New Chander Nagar, Ludhiana. An inter-house cricket match was played at New Senior Secondary School, Sarabha Nagar, to mark Christmas. The match was limited to 15 over. Subhash Bose and Tagore houses won the match by 7 wickets. Deepak Pahwaa of plus-II scored 27 runs in 7 balls. He was adjudged man of the match.

Meanwhile, Saraswati Modern School organised a colourful cultural programme here today. After a prayer song, the students presented a dance on the song 'Merry Christmas'.

Divya spoke on the life of Christ and gave the message of Christmas. A tableau was presented on the life Jesus Christ. The function ended with the National song.

Students of Jesus Sacred Heart also enacted the story of birth of Lord Jesus and his childhood days here today. His message of love was conveyed to every schoolchild as they sang Christmas carols lustily. Children dressed up as Santa Claus greeted each other and exchanged gifts. Various fun games and a feast was organised for the children. Ms Gurnam Kaur Grewal, Principal, spoke on the life of Christ.

Workshop on healthcare

A workshop on healthcare for children was organised by the health club of KVM, city branch, for the students of classes VI, VII and VIII. Dr Gurdeep Ralhan conducted the workshop for the boys and Dr Acchla Gupta for the girls. The students were made aware about the biological and emotional changes they would be experiencing and they were guided on how to cope with them. Mrs Namita Raj Singh, Headmistress of the school, proposed a vote of thanks.

BVM organises annual function

Bhartiya Vidya Mandir, Kitchlu Nagar, organised annual prize distribution function. Dr Anand Sehgal, ex-student, BVM, was the guest of honour. An English group song, a Hindi poem and an English play on female foeticide enthralled the audience. The programme ended with a Rajasthani dance after the prizes were distributed.

The annual prize distribution functions of Bhartiya Vidya Mandir, Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar, and Shishu Vatika were organised at Dr Hedgewar Sabha Grih here today. Dr Ashish Nayyar, an alumni of the school, was the chief guest. Students of Shishu Vatika presented songs and dances, while senior students of the BVM presented a skit, a Hindi play and dances. The school report was read out by the Principal, Ms Sunil Arora.

Meanwhile, the 36th annual prize distribution function of Rajkarni Mahashakti High School, Chand Cinema Road, was held yesterday. Prof Rajinder Bhandari ignited the lamp followed by a cultural programme that included Ganesh Vandana, folk songs, patriotic songs, modelling, gidda and bhangra. The annual report of the school was read out by Principal Shashi Saggar. Mr Bhandari distributed the prizes and encouraged the children.

Cultural programme

The 15th annual prize distribution and cultural programme of the senior section of Green Land Senior Secondary School was organised yesterday. Mr Chander Shekhar, Additional Director of Police, was the chief guest. Students presented a play on female foeticide exposing the hollowness of society. As many as 700 students participated in the function that included songs, skits and dances.

Workshop for GNIMT faculty

A faculty development programme on 'Achieving Excellence through Proactive Teachers' was held at Guru Nanak Institute of Management & Technology (GNIMT) here yesterday under the aegis of the ISTE chapter.

Renowned management consultant, Mr G.S. Korey, was the resource person. The programme was attended by all faculty members of the GNIMT. Mr Korey discussed various aspects of teaching. The main emphasis of the workshop was on the role of a teacher in building an institute. He touched all aspects showing how a teacher with his/her proactive approach could take the institute to top. The faculty members performed some group exercises for better understanding and clarity of their role as a teacher.

Doraha nursing school celebrates Christmas

Doraha, December 23
A function was organised by the staff and students of Sidhu School of Nursing, Doraha, to celebrate Christmas. Gurpreet Kaur of second year spoke on the life and the mission of Jesus Christ. Dr Harbans Singh was the chief guest on the occasion.

The students depicted the spirit of love, harmony and fellowship through a colourful cultural programme. The entire area was tastefully decorated with balloons and buntings. A large Christmas tree decorated with streamers, jingle bells and gifts was the centre of attraction.

Harpreet Kaur, also of second year, was dressed as Santa Claus and distributed sweets and gifts. Dr Ravinder Singh Sidhu and Dr Gursaran Kaur Sidhu, directors of the school, highlighted the message of love, compassion and harmony. He also emphasised its importance and relevance to the medical and nursing profession. A community lunch was also organised.

Court holiday from December 25-31

Ludhiana, December 23
The district courts will remain closed from December 25 to 31. For urgent matters such as bail applications, injunction/stay matters falling within the jurisdiction of the sessions courts, Mr Harbans Lal, District and Sessions Judge, will be available on December 25.

Mr H.P.S. Mahal, Additional Sessions Judge, will be available on December 26 and 27, Mr Satvinder Singh, Additional Sessions Judge, on December 28, Mr Sanjiv Berry, Additional Sessions Judge, on December 29, 30 and Mr Gurbir Singh, Additional Sessions Judge, on December 31. — OC

Despite chaos, ‘tera suroor...’ rocks Ludhiana

The chaos and mismanagement during the show did not deter, the popular singer and actor, Himesh Reshammiya, from rocking the city on Friday night.

Even though the show began quite late - four hours behind schedule, the wait was worth it. But once he announced his arrival, the young audience, rocked along the popular numbers, like 'tera suroor, jalak dikhla ja, and many more.

Earlier, during a conversation with reporters, Reshammiya attributed his success and popularity to luck. He did not mind being superstitious about his cap, which he seldom took off. He said it had got him luck. "At least I feel so", he remarked. And he was wearing his cap throughout the show.

He said, singing was and it would remain his first love. He said, whether he got success in acting or not, he would ensure that he kept on singing. "It is my life and blood", he remarked.

Reshammiya disclosed that he was currently working on two movies. In one of them he would be taking off his cap for "just 10 minutes", because the scene demanded it.

To a question about some altercation with noted singer Asha Bhonsle over his comments on the great musician R.D. Burman that he too sang through the nose. He said "I was wrong and Asha Ji was right as I should not have commented on the great music maestros".

He admitted that he was singing through his nose. But, he also added that there was nothing wrong in it as long as he sang properly and was loved and liked by his fans.

Reshammiya appeared to be modest and down to earth. He said, it was not only talent, but luck as well that played an important role in the success and popularity of an artist. He pointed out that there was a lot of talent around but not everybody got success.

At the same time, he observed, one should never feel let down or give up. Reshammiya, who would be singing a Punjabi song in one of his new films, he said, Punjabi music fascinated him a great deal. "In fact every aspect of Punjabi life as it is live, robust and vibrant thrills me", he remarked.

He said, he was told that Ludhiana was one of the most happening places in the North. He said, this was his first visit to the town and he would look forward to coming there frequently only if the time and schedule permitted him.
