Vishal Bhardwaj’s The Blue Umbrella, based on a Ruskin Bond novella by the same name, will hit the theatres on January 5. The film, to be released by UTV Classics, a brand of UTV Motion Pictures, is a children’s film which combines entertainment with morality. The film, with Pankaj Kapur and Shreya Sharma as lead cast, has been screened at various international film festivals. The film is set against the backdrop of an idyllic village in Himachal Pradesh. In the film, Pankaj Kapur plays NandKishore, a shrewd shopkeeper. Nandu, whose character is symbolic of the common man, gets enchanted by a beautiful blue umbrella owned by Binya, a small girl played by Shreya Sharma. The umbrella becomes the centre of attraction, disturbing the otherwise serene and peaceful ambience. The story takes an
abrupt turn when the umbrella goes missing one day. And thus begins
the quest for the umbrella, leading the two leading characters into a
world of knowledge. The umbrella, which has deftly been kept in the
foreground by the director, symbolises every human emotion from love
to longing, from desire to greed. Vishal Bhardwaj, who started his
career as a music director in Maachis, has directed films like Maqbool
and Omkara. His film Makdee struck a chord with
children. — D.P.
