Employment in India's fast-growing telecom sector is set to double in the next five years from the present level of 1.5 million people, industry experts, gathered at the CEO Conclave in Colombo have said.
The Indian IT services and software sector is likely to generate revenue of US $ 80 billion in the near future, providing employment to four million people, experts, including IIM-Ahemdabad Professor Rekha Jain, estimate.
"Even as the SAARC region gears up for 3G and NGN, it is important to build the human capacity for the purpose. The nations need to build training programmes for professionals.
The need of the hour is improved human resource and regulations and not so much the network," Jain said.
The largest chunk of jobs in the telecom industry will be created for marketing experts, network engineers, planners and customers relations managers, Jain said, adding jobs would be created right from the operator level to technical experts and marketing professionals.
Jain said deploying networks was a task, which could be undertaken by anyone, and "even vendors can do it." But it has to be an industry initiative, not something an academician could decide, she added.
"With the people concentrating too much on the supply side, human resource tends to be taken lightly. But it is to get people to work in a team, and show them the value of communication," Jain said.
