Looking at strengthening its operations in the overseas market, software major TCS plans to hike its headcount in Latin America, while its joint venture with Microsoft and NDRC in China is scheduled to kickstart by the year-end. "Our new focus areas are now Latin America and China. We are looking at increasing the headcount to 6,000 from the current level of 3,500 in those Latin American countries, where we have operations — Chile, Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil," TCS CEO S. Ramadorai said recently. The increase in headcount would be carried out over the next 18 months, which would be a mix of locals and Indian expatriates, he said.

Dell headcount to touch 20,000
Taking its total headcount in India to 20,000, global PC-maker Dell will start manufacturing all its products, including desktops, laptops and computer peripherals, in the country by the first half of 2007. Dell currently employs about 13,000 people in India and in the next couple of years, is expected to take the total number of its employees to 20,000. To reach out to customers across the world with affordable technology, Dell recently opened its new customer contact centre in Gurgaon. The 300,000 square-foot centre currently employs 800 people and the number would increase to 1,000 by the end of this year. The centre has a total capacity of 3,000 employees. "In the Gurgaon centre, we are piloting innovative support strategies that we hope to replicate around the world. We are also investing in capabilities of our support professionals through training and certification programmes," Hunter added.

Chess in the classroom
The NIIT MindChampions Academy, a joint initiative of NIIT and NIIT Mind Champion Viswanathan Anand, conducted the first-ever inter-district chess event, Chess Master 2006 for Himachal Pradesh Government Schools, in Shimla recently. The academy, running in nearly 3000 schools in the country, exposes students in the age group of 6-15 to the world of chess. The first of its kind in Himachal, the NIIT Chess event had nearly 18,000 students from over 200 government schools spread across 11 districts of the state, participate this year.

IGNOU courses on rubber technology
Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in collaboration with the Rubber Board will launch new academic programmes on Rubber Cultivation and Processing Technology, V. N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice-Chancellor, IGNOU, has said. Addressing a press conference in Kochi recently, Pillai said the course was primarily targetting the traditional farmers. It will also translate the study materials of selected programmes into Malayalam language and offer through prospective local study centres. IGNOU also has plans to introduce a Plantation Management Course from next academic year, he said. The university would establish sub-study centres in four islands of Lakshadweep in plus two schools under the existing Study Centre in Kavaratti. He said each Regional Centre of IGNOU has been asked to develop a website of their own within a month's time. A Student Grievance Redressal Centre would be launched in the Regional Centres and one person would be specially deputed in each centre to manage it, he said. IGNOU has decided to form an Alumini Association, he said, adding the association will act as a forum for its members to meet, discuss, deliberate and share relevant experiences towards dissemination of high education.
