NC: PDP raising self-rule to check its shrinking base Srinagar, November 1 Addressing a press conference a day after PDP’s patron Mufti Sayeed’s speech at the UN, the National Conference president claimed that the Mufti’s policies had been “exposed”. “He is doing it when support of the PDP is diminishing”, Mr Omar said. He added the NC’s regional autonomy demand was not on regional, religious or communal lines and added that the PDP leadership was working on the “bandwagon of trifurcation”. “We do not know whether he (Mufti) has talked of it (self-rule) at the UN or not”, he said and dared the PDP to bring a resolution to this effect in the state’s legislature on the pattern of greater autonomy. He lamented the people did not have clear idea of the self-rule formula and added that there was no point taking it to the international forums. Taking a dig at the role of central government, the National Conference president alleged that it was on the look-out for “mouthpiece or agents” in Jammu and Kashmir. Like the separatist Hurriyat Conference chairman and hardline leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Omar held the idea of self rule had originated from the centre. He asserted the Centre did not itself come forward with the idea but had brought it through the PDP “mouthpiece”. He compared it with Pakistan President General Parvez Musharraf, who according to Omar, put forward his ideas himself and clearly. Mr Omar held that self-rule “might come into being like the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus service”, but pointed out there was not much difference between the autonomy and self-rule. “Do not compare the PDP’s self rule with Musharraf’s self-rule”, Omar said to questions. Referring to the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, Mr Omar said that he had written a letter on all issues to Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh. He alleged there had been no respite in the growing human rights violations and the PDP’s claims of the healing touch policy and peace with dignity were only slogans. Mr Omar claimed that the Prime Minister’s assurance on zero tolerance over human rights violations were not adhered to and when the NC raised the issues the PDP shot back “with reference to our records”. |
Pandit bodies decry Centre’s silence on PDP’s self-rule idea Jammu, November 1 Addressing a news conference here today chairman, Panun Kashmir, Dr Ajay Chrungoo, Mr M.K. Teng, chairman, Advisory committee of Panun Kashmir, Mr O.N. Trisal, President, All-State Kashmiri Pandit Solidarity Conference, said the Centre and the Congress were “mute spectators” while the PDP had embarked on “a relentless assault on the sovereignty and integrity of India” by demanding the establishment of ‘self-rule’ that existed in 16th century when Yusuf Shah Chak was Kashmir’s ruler.” Dr Chrungoo said the demand for returning to the ‘self-rule’ that existed during the Chak rule had serious political connotations as Yusuf Shah Chak had the history of having persecuted Hindus and Sunni Muslims. Dr Chrungoo said on one hand the Government of India ignored the plight of Kashmiris displaced people on the other it did not oppose slogans and demands that had the potential of encouraging secessionism. He said the slogan of self-rule and greater autonomy besides the demand for the demilitarisation and joint management were a “ploy to covert Jammu and Kashmir into a de jure Muslim state leaving scope for Pakistan and the Jehadis for grabbing the state.” The Pandit leaders said “We denounce the peace process as it is. We condemn the self-rule as advocated by Pakistan and the PDP. We berate the Government of India’s silence on these issues. “They said that as a nationalist community” we wish to warn the Centre about the dangers of demilitarisation and autonomy.” |

Cong rule disappointing, alleges BJP Jammu, November 1 Prof. Hari Om, vice-president of the state unit of the BJP, while reacting to the completion of one year in office of Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, said neither the Congress- led government was nation-centric and nor it was transparent and accountable to the people. He said terrorist violence was continuing unabated in the state and corruption had broken the previous records as the corrupt elements were allowed to go scot-free. The BJP leader said there was no coordination among the ministers and the coalition partners who were pursuing their own agenda. The lust for power was the only force that was keeping the coalition in a bind, he claimed. Prof. Hari Om pointed out that differences among senior Congress leaders on serious issues had come in the open. Mr. Azad and the Transport Minister, Mr. Mangat Ram Sharma, differed on the contentious issue of the Centre ordering a cease-fire during Ramzan and clemency to Afzal Guru, who has been sentenced to death for the terrorist attack on Parliament. |

Another embarrassment for cops Jammu, November 1 The acquittal of these four persons by the Additional Sessions Judge,
Mr. N.D. Wani, has come within 24 hours of another court discharging the six accused in the terrorist attack at the Raghunath temple where 11 persons were killed in 2002. Those acquitted are, Fiaz-ul-Wahid, Sheikh Hafeez-ul-Rehman, Ghulam Nabi and Abdul Rashid. The court observed that there was no evidence to establish the presence of the accused at the bus stand. The prosecution witnesses did not identify them for exploding the device. These acquittals have put the police under a scanner as the cases were not properly prepared against the accused. Many accused were let off in the past too because of lack of evidence. |
