PGI doctors given clean chit
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, November 1
Three months after a raid by the Vigilance wing of the PGI on operating theatres in Nehru Hospital, PGI, the authorities today gave a clean chit to doctors and other technical staff.

The wing had conducted a raid on 17 lockers of doctors and other technical staff in operating theatres and had seized drugs, implants and other equipment. The doctors had lodged a protest against the raid, terming it as the unethical.

The PGI authorities had constituted a committee under the leadership of Prof Deepak Bhasin of the Department of Gastroenterology, for investigating the matter.

Addressing mediapersons, the PGI Director, Prof K.K. Talwar, claimed that the investigations hardly yielded anything.

Dr Amod Gupta, Chief Vigilance Officer, PGI, said the department had received the committee report. Going through every aspect, the committee had reached a conclusion that none of the lockers contained material that was unexplained. The material was not out of the ordinary and was part of the routine operational arrangement.

The committee had not found any mala fide intention for keeping the material in the lockers. “It was found that the OT staff and the doctors were helping poor and needy persons by using the material in emergency. The committee found that the material recovered from the lockers was disposables left over by attendants of the patients for use by the poor patients, samples given by medical representatives or some indented material from the PGI stores,” claimed Dr Gupta.

He said the committee had recommended certain action that needed to be taken to improve the system of material and drug management so that the action of the OT staff was not dubbed illegal.
