Akshay Kumar is smiling from ear to ear with his "high success ratio regardless of bad career choices". Vickey Lalwani chats up Bollywood’s most dependable hunk of the moment
How are you feeling after the success of Phir Hera Pheri? I am feeling that I have put fuel in a plane. It’s great to see money coming into the film industry. I hear that the film is set to break some records in certain territories. Did you expect such a big success to the sequel? Honestly, no. I thought it will succeed but not to this extent. Making a sequel is scary. You work so hard... and then there are unfair comparisons with the first one. Why don’t you do films
with Karan Johar and Yash Chopra? You were supposed to work with Ram Gopal Varma? We were talking on Ek but that film never happened. I have no problems on the length of a role. It should leave an impact, that’s all. I would even love to do a horror film with Ramu. There’s a feeling in the industry that you hog limelight, hog footage and edit others’ roles? I have been hearing this for too long now. I wonder why haven’t I got the best editor award till now? The problem is that the same people accuse me and then do five more films with me. I think that I have answered your question. You had a fight with Sunil Shetty while Phir Hera Pheri was being edited? No such fight happened. These are preposterous rumours. You have never heard me talking about such things. I don’t know where it comes from. You have tasted lot of success in the recent past, but Hum Ko Deewana Kar Gaye was an exception? Well, many things went wrong with that film. I wouldn’t like to pinpoint them and make a list. Are you doing another film with Katrina Kaif? Yes. We are doing Namaste London directed by Vipul Shah. We start shooting soon. You refused an award for Garam Masala? Yes, I did. They wanted to award me as the Best Comic Hero. I was the hero in Garam Masala. Hollywood doesn’t discriminate in this way. In that respect, you might as well give Aamir Khan the Best Historical Hero award for Mangal Pandey — The Rising. Have you been choosy in recent times? I have realised that I have done a lot of mediocre films, which even I don’t want to watch. But I have managed a high success ratio regardless of my bad career choices. But now that I have given the audience and the box office consecutive hits, I am in a position where I can be a little picky. I will stick to my decision of doing only three films a year. How are you going to utilise the free time? I love travelling and have decided to travel across the globe with Tina and Aarav. I have seen most of the places around the world, but those trips were due to work. Just recently, we took Aarav to Bangkok and Phuket. I also visited Barcelona, Madrid and Murcia with Twinkle. Any memorable experience? In Spain a guy ran off with my wallet. I ran after him. He threw it back. But Twinkle got a bit upset. She didn’t want me to chase him (smiles). You were planning to start a martial arts school? I asked the government to give me big space. They did, but in Bhayandar, which is far from where I stay. If I would not go there, how would I expect my students to? I would be stuck two to three hours in traffic. I am looking for space somewhere close to my house. — TWF
