Calculated move
Pervin Malhotra

Q I have completed M. Sc (Maths) and B. Ed and have been working in the DAV Public School for five years. I want to teach in the USA as a maths teacher. But I don’t know how and where to apply for a teacher’s post. Please let me know the full procedure.

— Kanwar Ashwani Singh

A The US government is wooing Indian teachers big time to meet the shortfall of educationists for their `No Child Left Behind’ policy, which makes schooling compulsory for all children in the US. After Indian IT professionals and nurses, it is time for teachers to make a beeline for greener pastures abroad. Indian teachers are in demand primarily because they come cheap when compared to the salaries paid to their US counterparts.

You need to get your teaching license after clearing the Praxis exam that states use as part of their teaching licensing certification process. Praxis I measures basic academic skills; Praxis II measures general and subject-specific knowledge and teaching skills; and Praxis III assesses classroom performance. Details: www.ets.org.

However, there is a catch: the American education sector does not have a systematic mechanism for the immigration of teachers. Educators are ‘imported’ from India on J1 visas, which expire after three years. Thereafter, you must return to India for two years. Only dedicated and hardworking candidates are invited for another 3 year teaching stint in the US.

However, there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Compared with the approx. Rs. 2 lakh p.a. salary at a Kendriya Vidyalaya in India, experienced teachers can earn between $ 36,000 - 45,000 p.a. And, of course, there are perks like the dollar-rupee conversion rate, not to mention the value addition to your CV as well as the authorities going out of their way to make you feel comfortable.

Teachers are also being lured by the coveted H-1B visas. The US Immigration and Naturalisation Service (INS) now recognises teachers as specialist workers, on a par with the techies.

Faced with an acute shortage of teachers, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has launched a Global Educators Outreach (GEO) programme, inviting applications from teachers around the world. (www.cps-humanresources.org)

Since you have 5 years teaching experience in a govt/ pvt school in Secondary Math/ Elementary Education, you could also look at the VIF (Visiting International Faculty Programme), which also places teachers in the USA (Round-trip fare, benefits, competitive salary and orientation). Apply online: www.vifprogram.com. The New York-based Teachers Placement Group (TPG) charges Rs. 3.5 lakh for the entire processing, including airfares, visa fees and relocation and training charges. Joining the men in khaki

Q I am a student of BA II at DAV College in Chandigarh. I am really inspired to become an IPS officer. But I do not know from where to start. Which exam will I have to take for the IPS? Please guide.

— Razdeep Singh Brar

A The Indian Police Service (IPS) is one of three all-India services of the Government of India. The other two are the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and the Indian Forest Service (IFS). The members of the IPS are primarily responsible for managing the policing functions of the states and the Central Government. These officers deal with all the matters pertaining to the Internal Security of India. The IPS specialises in all security-related issues.

You could choose from either of the two routes available to you after your graduation.

To become a Sub-Inspector (in the non-gazetted cadre in BSF, CISF, CRPF, ITBP & SSB), you have to take the Central Police Organisations Exam conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) which consists of a written exam and interview. Eligibility: Bachelor’s degree, NCC B/ C certificate preferred. The age limit is 20-25 years.

Generally to qualify for all police jobs, you need to be physically fit and meet certain physical standards (i.e. minimum height of 170 cm (157 cm for women candidates) and chest expansion of 85 cm, 80 cm unexpanded for men).

Eyesight: Minimum distance vision should be 6/6 and 6/9 in two eyes without correction plus accurate colour vision. You should not have knock knees, flat foot, varicose vein or a squint in eyes.

SIs are initially posted at police stations as investigating officers in charge of intelligence gathering, maintaining law and order and on VIP duty.

If you are a degree holder and keen on becoming a gazetted police officer, you need to take the Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and join the Indian Police Service (IPS). The age requirement is 21-30 years (On August 1 in the year of the exam). This exam comprises three stages: Preliminary (Objective type) Exam, Main (Written) Exam and the Interview. You have to clear all the three stages and secure a good rank to make it to the IPS. And when you do, don’t forget to live up to the motto: With You. For You. Always!

Alternatively, you can appear for the competitive exams conducted by the State Public Service Commissions.aFor details, log onto www.upsc.gov.in

Scent of an opportunity

Q I have been working as a beautician for the last two years. I want to specialise in aromatherapy or spa therapy. Is this a good option?

— Arshi Chabbra

A Aromatherapy is the perfect panacea for the poor, stressed out souls. No wonder alternate therapies like aroma, chroma and holistic healing spas are all the rage in not only the metros but also small towns. You already have a few years experience in skin care, so all you need to do is supplement your skill set with a course in aromatherapy. You will learn all about the aromatic oils and the benefits of different fragrances for different skin types.

A spa therapist similarly must know the basics of different body detoxifying techniques like cellulite treatment, use of hot and cold stones, full body massage, body wraps, scrubs and hydrotherapy.

With some investment, you start your very own body treatment centre or you can join a hotel spa, holistic health clinic etc.

Healthy choice
