Rs 3,000 cr for 8 road projects
Ludhiana, September 6 He was addressing a well attended gathering at Chak Sarwan Nath village, 25 km from here, after laying the foundation stone of a new link road from Ludhiana–Chak Sarwan Nath road to Panglian village and the construction of a link road and periphery of the village. The minister also launched a project for the upgradation of 18.99 km- long Kohara Machhiwara road to be constructed at a cost of Rs. 295 lakh at Kohara and the construction of Dhanasu road to Navodaya School road and of Bhamia Kalan to Jhabewal road. Elaborating on the projects, Mr. Bajwa said the projects included the four laning of the Chandigarh-Kiratpur road costing Rs. 350 crore, six laning of the Ambala-Chandigarh highway costing Rs. 150 crore, six laning of the Chandigarh- Ludhiana, four laning of the Jalandhar- Amritsar road, four laning of the Amritsar-Wagah border stretch, four laning of the Amritsar-Pathankot route, six laning of the Shambu- Jalandhar road and six laning of the Chandigarh -Patiala road. He said 21 railway overbridges would be constructed at all railway crossings and bridges over the rivers at the required places on these roads. Referring to the other road projects taken up by the state government in the past over four years, Mr. Bajwa informed that the government was constructing 22 railway over bridges, a road corridor of 1140 km, six new bridges over different rivers and 355 km of main road at a cost of Rs 500 crore through the Punjab Infrastructure Development Board. |
Installation of Sikh high priests may be postponed
Amritsar, September 6 The meeting of the Sikh high priests would also take up the complaint filed by certain Sikh organisations against a UK-based Sikh priest. It may be mentioned here that the installation ceremony of the three High Priests was postponed earlier also. The Nihang factions, Damdami Taksal and certain other organisations had also convened an emergency meeting for September 8 at the headquarters of the Harianwela faction to take the next course of action against the move of the SGPC. Baba Harnam Singh Khalsa, chief of Damdami Taksal, and Baba Ram Singh, of the breakaway faction of Taksal had already issued strong warning to the SGPC against installation of the three High Priests. — TNS |
Panchayat union to gherao Assembly
Bathinda, September 6 He demanded that the Panchayati Raj Institutions be given their constitutional rights. Their main demands are the implementation of the 73rd amendment in the Constitution, assigning of inquiries related to panchayats to the Rural Development Department and checking Vigilance’s intervention, the formation of planning boards under Section 243ZD of the Constitution and sanction of grants on the basis of population without any political interference. He lamented that the government had spent crores of rupees on holding huge functions while handing over six departments to panchayats, but the panchayats were yet to get their control in reality. He demanded that 29 departments along with funds and proper infrastructure at the village-level be handed over to panchayats. |
Suspended Secy resumes charge on SGJC order
Amritsar, September 6 The order of the SGJC, pronounced by President Kashmir Singh Patti, stated that Mr Raghbir Singh was placed under suspension without issuing him a charge sheet. The order read, ‘The application will be disposed of after hearing both the parties on September 12. I stayed the operation of the order (of the SGPC), dated August 26 issued by the SGPC without a charge sheet till further orders”. Mr Raghbir Singh had levelled serious charges against the SGPC chief, Mr Avtar Singh, and the Shiromani Akali Dal supremo, Mr Parkash Singh Badal. He had alleged that he was suspended for not succumbing to the pressure from the SGPC chief and Mr Badal who wanted transfer of prime land of the SGPC-run medical college in the name of the trust in which both (Mr Badal and the SGPC chief) were trustees. |
Sukhbir joins investigation in assault case
Faridkot, September 6 A case of robbery and wrongful confinement was registered against Mr Sukhbir Singh on the complaint of Mr Ajay Verma, a photojournalist with Desh Sewak. The incident dates back to Assembly elections in 2002. Mr Sukhbir Singh arrived at the police station at about 10.30 am. A large number of his supporters also converged there and raised slogans in his favour. After taking part in the probe he came out of the police station at 1 pm. Talking to media persons, he said he had full faith in the judiciary. He alleged that after taking over the reigns of the state in 2002 the Congress regime had been implicating SAD workers in false cases and he too was a victim of the ruling party’s conspiracy. |
Anganwari workers block traffic
Rajpura, September 6 The members of the union earlier also protested in front of the office of the CDPO against the state government for not fulfilling their long- pending demands. Addressing the gathering, Ms Sunita Rani, district president of the union, claimed that the government had been lingering on the demands of anganwari workers’ helpers. The protesters have been demanding the transfer of ICDS to a government department and that its workers and helpers be given Class III and IV grades, respectively. They have also asked for Rs 3,000 and Rs 4,000 per month till the transfer of the ICDS to the government department. |

War widows honoured Chandigarh, September 6 Raja Day is observed to commemorate the capture of the strategically vital Raja Picquet near Haji Pir Pass during the 1965 Indo-Pak war, for which the battalion was awarded the Battle Honour Picquet. Addressing officers and men during a special sainik sammelan at Chandimandir, the Chief Minister commended the supreme sacrifices made by the soldiers of this regiment in various post-independence operations as well as in France, Germany, China, North America and Italy in the days of yore. War widows and battle casualties were also honoured on the occasion. The Chief Minister presented a cheque of Rs 51,000 each to 30 war widows and a financial assistance of Rs 25,000 each to 42 battle casualties. On the occasion, the family of Havaldar Joginder Singh gifted the Ashok Chakra won by him along with its Citation to the battalion. At present commanded by Col Karan Mahajan, the history of the regiment dates back to 1846, when it was raised as the Ludhiana Sikhs. |
Col Sandhu alleges campaign against him
Amritsar, September 6 He said Baba Ranjit Singh Rania of the Taruna Dal, headed by Nihang Ajit Singh Poohla, had accused him of being an ISI agent and receiving funds from Paramjit Singh Panjwar, chief of the Khalistan Commando Force, for the campaign against Poohla. He said Rania had also accused him of being a Muslim as his two brothers, Mohammed Shahi and Ahmed Shahi, had been living at Model Town in Lahore. TNS |

Fatehgarh Sahib, September 6 According to the press note issued here today, Mr Baldev Singh, supervisor, Market Committee, Sirhind, Mr Gurpreet Singh, Rural Water Supply Department, and Mr Hans Raj, Inspector, Punsup, did not perform their duty deliberately nor they gave satisfactory replies to the show-cause notices served upon them. The Deputy Commissioner warned that criminal cases u/s 32 of the People’s Representation Act, 1950, would be registered if their departments did not take any action. OC |
JE caught taking bribe
Moga, September 6 According to Vigilance Bureau sources, contractor Mahender Singh approached the Vigilance Bureau a few days ago and stated that the JE had demanded Rs 50,000 as bribe from him for clearing two bills of Rs 1,88,000 and Rs 73,000 for preparing roads in different parts of
Dharamkot. Subsequently, the contractor went to give Rs 20,000 to the JE at his house on the Dutt road in Moga this morning. A Vigilance Bureau team, led by DSP Moga Vinod Kumar Chaudhury, had already laid a trap. The JE was caught red-handed. As much as Rs 83,000, 722 gm of gold ornaments and an Accent car were recovered from his house during the search. The Vigilance Bureau confiscated these items. Around 884 gm of ornaments was recovered from his locker in a bank, the sources added.

When DC dons cap of teacher
Nawanshahr, September 6 The Deputy Commissioner taught mathematics to Class IX. He solved sums on blackboard and encouraged the students to solve sums on the blackboard. While taking the social studies period of Class VII, the Deputy Commissioner asked questions based on the chapters related to social evils like sati, female foeticide and fundamental rights. He examined the English notebooks of the students of Class VI. He also took the science class of the Class VI students. He reached the school at about 8 am and spent about two and a half hours in the school. He pulled up the teachers who were not present in the morning assembly. He inspected toilets and drinking water and electricity facilities in the school. |
