Dr Gupta takes VRS

Chandigarh, September 6
Dr Sushil Kumar Gupta, Laparoscopic and General Surgeon, has sought voluntary retirement after serving for 23 years in the Surgery Department of the Sector 16 General Hospital here. He was given a farewell by his colleagues today.

Dr Gupta has expertise in laparoscopic surgery of the abdomen - gall bladder, appendix, hernia, uterus and kidney – as also in all general and emergency surgeries.

He introduced laparoscopic surgery in the Sector 16 hospital in 1998.

Chhattisgarh beat HP 5-0

Chhattisgarh thrashed Himachal Pradesh 5-0 in Administrator’s Challenge Cup Football Tournament being played at the Sports Complex, Sector 42, here today.

Evan scored the first goal for Chhattisgarh. He again struck in the 40th minute. Chhattisgarh lads were leading by 2-0 at the breather.

After break, Chhattisgarh scored three more goals. Puran and Lalit were the other contributors.

In the second match of the day, Punjab beat Sanjay Football Academy 6-1. Amritpal Singh of Punjab opened the account in the 20th minute. The second goal came through Kulvir Singh.

Gurwant Singh and Ajay Kushal of Sanjay Football Academy were shown yellow cards. Harjit Singh of Punjab was also cautioned by the referee for indulging in rough play.

In the second half, Harjit by scored four goals. The solitary goal for Sanjay Football Academy Chandigarh was scored by Kunal Singh.

The last match between St Stephen’s Football Academy, Chandigarh, and UP was won by the former 6-1. Both teams played at a fast pace. St Stephens’ striking line mostly consisted of boys from the North-East who exhibited brilliant soccer. G. Pamei of St Stephen’s scored the first goal. St Stephen’s were leading 1-0 at the breather.

It was Raoul Lorni of St Stephen’s who scored the second goal for his team. After taking the lead, St Stephens mounted more pressure and succeeded in scoring the third goal through Harpreet Bedi.

Washim Khan and Krishan Lal of UP and Nikhil Parashar of St Stephen’s were shown yellow cards.

Roaul Lorni and Johny Chand netted the last three goals.

St Stephen’s, St Peter’s move into soccer semifinals

St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, will face St Soldier’s International School, Sector 28, while Saupin’s School, Sector 32, will take on St Peter’s, Sector 37, in the semifinals of the Chandigarh Atoms Under-13 Football Tournament for Shivalik Trophy being played at Shivalik Public School here today.

In today’s quarterfinals, St Soldiers defeated St John’s School, Sector 26, by 4-2.

St Soldier’s emerged winners in the chances session of tie-breaker. Vijay Singh, Rahul Singh, Jaideep Singh and Vikramjit Singh converted their spot kicks for St Solider’s.

For St John’s, Uday Singh and Raghav Sardhana netted the goals.

In another match, the two goals scored through Waris Rashid enabled St Stephen’s School-45 to outclass Vivek High School, Sector 38, by 3-0.

St Stephen’s opened their accounts in the seventh minute through Jasbir. Putting up a good show, Waris Rashid struck to engineer Vivek’s ouster.

St Peter’s School, Sector 37, ended the winning streak of New Public School-18 as the former recorded an easy 3-0 triumph. Ayush emerged their hero by scoring a brace.

The other contributor was Lakhsay, who sent the ball home in the 26th minute.

Chandigarh beat Ludhiana

Chandigarh beat Ludhiana by 170 runs in the Punjab Inter-Districts Cricket Tournament for Katoch Shield at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, here today.

Replying to Chandigarh's first innings 328 runs, Ludhiana batsmen were bundled out on just 158 runs in 63 overs.

Inspector suspended over charges of frame-up

Chandigarh, September 6
The UT Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Satish Chandra, yesterday placed under suspension the in charge of Special Crime Investigation Cell, Inspector Ram Kumar, after a junk dealer alleged that he was being implicated in a false case by the Inspector.

The remaining staff of the cell has also been sent to the Police Lines.

The matter came to the light after it was highlighted in a section of media. The complainant, Mr Varinder Pal Gupta, in his complaint to the IGP on Monday alleged that Inspector Ram Kumar had taken Rs 1.65 lakh from him for not implicating him for buying the stolen property.

He further alleged that the said officer had arrested two thieves and later tried to implicate him in the case.

It may be mentioned that the cell had been investigating cases of thefts of copper wires, including those belongings to BSNL.
