Treatment of elbow fractures discussed
Hand surgeons’ conference

Live demonstration was given on treatment of distal radius fractures and endoscopic surgery (keyhole surgery) of the cubital tunnel decompression at the elbow at two workshops organised on the inaugural of the 30th annual conference of the Indian Society for Surgery of Hand at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Chandigarh, here today.

Dr Robert J. Medoff from Hawaii, USA, demonstrated on the treatment of distal radius fractures. Dr Medoff has his own technique and instructions in the field. The delegates, who were given artificial bones-models, also tried their hand on the technique under Dr Robert’s supervision on the spot.

While Dr Reimer Hoffmann of Germany demonstrated on the endoscopic surgery (keyhole surgery) of the cubital tunnel decompression at the elbow and involved the delegates in the process. The “surgeries” were also telecasted live for the delegates through video transmission.

Around 250 delegates from India, Nepal, Bangladesh and the UK besides faculty members from USA, UK, Germany, Austria, Australia, Hong Kong, Japan and Netherlands who have been participating in the three-day conference being organised for the first time in Chandigarh.

Later Prof RC Sobti, Vice-Chancellor of the Panjab University, Chandigarh, formally inaugurated the conference and stressed on the need of super-specialisation in hand surgery in India. He also appreciated the GMCH doctors for organising the conference for involving specialist from all over the world and find out new techniques in the field of surgery.

The Vice Chancellor also released a souvenir of the Indian Society for Surgery of Hand on the occasion.

While addressing the delegates, Dr Bhaskaranand Kumar, president of the Indian Society for Surgery of Hand, claimed that the country was in a need of about 10,000 basic hand surgeons.

He added that hand injuries were the most common (20-25 per cent) seen in emergency departments. These were the most common category after cardiac conditions in which insurance companies have been paying compensation.

Dr HM Swami, director-principal of the GMCH, welcomed the chief guest and delegates while Dr Sudhir Kumar Garg, Head of the Orthopaedics department of the GMCH, highlighted the achievements of the department in various types of surgeries.

Dr S Rajasabapathy, secretary of the society, Dr Ravi Kumar Gupta, a specialist in hand surgery with the GMCH, also spoke on the occasion.

UT football academy thrash HP rivals 36-0

Star-studded defending champion Chandigarh Football Academy registered a win over Himachal Pradesh Football Association by 36 - 0 in the opening match of 4th Administrator’s Challenge Cup of the All India Football Tournament played at the Football Stadium, Sector-17.

Gen (Retd) S.F. Rodrigues, Governor of Punjab and Administrator, UT, Chandigarh, was the Chief Guest. He took the salute by the participating teams. Mr S.K. Sandhu, IAS, Secretary Sports and Finance, Mr I.S. Sandhu, Additional Deputy Commissioner-cum-Director Sports, and Mr Ravinder Talwar, president, Chandigarh Football Association, were among the dignitaries present.

It was a cakewalk for CFA lads. They dominated the proceedings from the word go. The CFA showered a rain of goals against Himachal Pradesh. Randeep Singh of the CFA opened the account for his team in the 4th minute of play through a free kick. The 2nd goal was scored by Gurtej in the 6th minute of play. It was again Randeep who scored the 3rd goal for his team off cross from Rakesh (left flank). Three minutes later, Manoj scored another goal. The 5th goal was scored by Ravinder in the 11th minute of play. The 6th goal was scored by Manoj in the 12th minute of play. The 7th goal was scored by Gurjinder through a power-packed grounder from 20 yds in the 14th minute of play.

A minute later, Abdul scored the 8th goal followed by another goal in the 19th minute of play. The 10th goal was scored by Manoj in the 21st minute of play. The 11th goal was scored by Gurtej in the 23rd minute. The 12th, 13th goals was scored by Rakesh and Randeep in the 25th and 27th minute. of the play.

The 14th goal was scored by Manoj in the 31st minute of play. The 15th goal was scored by Rakesh in the 32nd minute followed by 16 th goal scored by Manoj in the 37 th minute. The 17 th goal was scored by Sukhdeep in the 44 th minute. The CFA lads were leading 17-0 at half time.

After the break, Jaspal scored 18 th goal in the 47 th minute followed by Sukhdeep who scored 19 th goal in the 50 th minute. Maninder scored the 20 th goal in the 51 st minute. The 21 st goal was scored by Gurjinder in the 57 th minute of play.

Rakesh scored the 22 nd goal in the 60 th minute of play. Rinku scored the 23 rd goal in the 61 st minute. Jaspal scored the 24th and 25th goal in the 63rd and 64th minutes. Gurjinder scored the 26 th goal in the 69 th minute.

Maninder scored the 27th goal in the 70th minute. Maninder scored the 28 th goal in the 71 st minute. Rakesh scored the 29 th goal in the 75th minute.

Maninder scored the 30 th and 31st goal in the 76 th and 77th minute. Rakesh scored the 32 nd goal in the 82 nd minute of play. Jaspal scored the 33 rd goal in the 84 th minute. Rakesh scored the 34 th goal in the 86th minute. Rinku scored the 35th goal in the 87th minute. Maninder scored the 36 th goal in the 90 th minute, registering the final score 36-0.

Players disqualified

As many as 18 players were asked to undergo medical examination at Government Hospital, Sector 16. Barring Harsimran of St Stephen’s Academy, Sector 45, all players were disqualified for being overaged. They were Pawan and Gurpreet. (Chandigarh Football Academy, Sector 42), Daljit, Mohammad Shahid and Jagdev (Hoshiarpur Football Academy) , Abhishek, Ali Haider, Sudesh Patel, Mayank Panday, Sandeep Bhagat, Arjun Kumar, Sanjay Patel, Abhishek K. Singh ( UP Football Association), Sudhir Saini (St. Stephen’s Football Academy) and Laxman (Service Sports Control Board). Two players of the Punjab Football Association, Jagdish Singh and Dhirinder Singh did not appear for the medical test. They, too, were disqualified.

Talwinderjit wins 100-m dash

National medallist sprinter Talwinderjit Kaur, representing Mount Carmel School, Sector-47, won the gold medal in 100-m dash by clocking her career-best time of 12.82 seconds in the two-day Chandigarh State Junior Athletic Championship, which began at Athletic Complex, Sector-7, here today.

About 400 budding athletes from various schools and colleges of the city are taking part in the meet.

Kashish Khanna of DAV School, Sector-15, also a national medallist, hurled the iron ball to a distance of 16.42 m to bag top honour in shot put in the boys U-18 years’ category.

Herwinder Singh of DAV College-10 and last years’ Junior National silver medallist won the gold medal in triple jump covering a distance of 14.07 m.

DAV clinch table soccer title

C L Aggarwal DAV Model School, Sector 7, Chandigarh, won the Award of Honour Champions Trophy of North Zone Table Soccer held at Vasant Valley Public School, Ladha, Sangrur district, from August 25 to 27.

Eleven gold medals were bagged by six players of DAV Model School, Chandigarh. While Arshad, Sakib, Saksha, Komal Negi and Ankur won two gold medals each, Vishal got one gold.

Eight players — Akib, Atul, Shankar, Dheeraj, Saurab, Tushar, Priyanka and Subhash — got a bronze each in various categories. Akib also won a silver medal.

As many as 500 students of various schools from Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Uttaranchal participated in the meet.

Soccer meet

Hosts St. Xavier’s, Chandigarh, beat Sanjay Public, Chandigarh (4-3), in the under-19 girls’ final match of St. Xavier’s Six-A-Side Football Tournament held at Sector 44-C, here today.

St. Soldiers’, Chandigarh, defeated Ryan International Chandigarh (2-1) in the under-12 boys’ category while New Public School, Sector 18, beat St Stephen’s, Sector 45, Chandigarh (3-2) in the under-19 boys final match.

Trials put off

Panchkula: The trials to select the Panchkula district (under-17) cricket team have been postponed due to rain. It will now be conducted at St Soldier Public School, Sector 16, on September 3 at 9 am.

According to Mr Sandeep Moudgil, Honorary Secretary of the Panchkula District Cricket Association (Affiliated to the Haryana Cricket Association), the selected team will participate in the Haryana State Inter-District (under 17) Cricket Championship to be conducted by the Haryana Cricket Association (an affiliated body of the Board of Control for Cricket in India) on September 6.

Choi kwang do camp from today

A two-day third international training camp is being organised by the Choi Kwang Do Martial Art International, India, at Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Sector-3, here from tomorrow.

Announcing this at a press conference here today, Bikram S. Thapa, general secretary of the association, said Grand Master Kwang Jo Choi, ninth degree black belt and founder and president of the Choi Kwang Do Martial Art International, Grand Master Don Woo, eighth degree black belt, Senior Master Marshall Pereira, seventh degree black belt, along with other senior instructors from the USA, UK and Australia would attend the two day camp.

It is for the first time that a black belt test is being supervised in India by the Grand Master. The camp will offer an opportunity to learn the concepts and techniques of choi kwang do. Choi explained and demonstrated self-defence skills. Choi also released a book on choi kwang do.

Athletics meet

Gian Jyoti Public School students were unbeatable and outstanding in the 38th District Athletics Open Meet for boys and girls (under-14, 16, 18 and 20). The school is affiliated with the District Olympia Association, SAS Nagar, Mohali.

The event was held on August 30 and 31. The school won 13 medals, including three gold, six silver and four bronze medals.

The students prepared under Ms Neelam Thakur and Ms Usha Kaul. The Principal, Ms Ranjeet Bedi, appreciated the students and motivated them to take up spots seriously.

No officer for more than 3 yrs on sensitive posts

Chandigarh, September 1
The Chandigarh Administration has decided to transfer all officers working on sensitive posts of their departments for more than three years. In future also the transfers on all such posts will be made on rotational basis.

To implement the instructions of the Central Vigilance Commission and the Department of Personnel, the Chandigarh Administration has decided to identify sensitive posts in various departments so as to make rotational transfers in respect of the officials posted on sensitive posts at periodic intervals.

All heads of departments of Chandigarh Administration have been asked to identify sensitive posts and transfer such officers/officials working on such posts for a period of more than three years, the Home Secretary-cum-Chief Vigilance Officer, Mr Krishna Mohan, disclosed today. — TNS
