Parents protest against “high-handedness” of
school in charge
Tribune News Service

Panchkula, September 1
It was high drama at Government Middle School, Nada, here today where parents and guardians of students gathered outside the premises to protest against the “high-handedness” of the school in charge, Ms Anjum Kaushik.

Maintaining that the in charge often got school toilets cleaned from students, the villagers said yesterday she insulted five teachers for coming to the rescue of students who had been turned away for coming late to school.

“The science and maths teacher, Ms Bharti Gupta, is always concerned about the welfare of the students. The in charge, however, leaves no stone unturned to insult her and openly abuses her as also other teachers of the school. We have complained against her to everybody — from the District Education Officer to the Deputy Chief Minister — but nothing has been done,” said Mr Jasbir Singh, sarpanch of the village.

Stating that spats were common between Ms Kaushik and Ms Gupta, the villagers said a few months back, both teachers had virtually come to blows. “During admission too, the in charge created fuss in admitting students. She is forever creating hurdles in school functioning. We are tired of her tantrums and studies of our children are suffering,” said Mr Ram Krishan of Beriwal village.

The villagers said students were forced to run errands for the school in charge and everything except studies was a priority with the school. “This is reflecting in the results of children though they are not at fault,” another villager claimed.

When contacted, the District Education Officer, Ms Kanta Malik, and other officials of the District Education Department said they were aware of the problem. They said senior officers of the department, had been apprised of the situation and some punitive action was likely next week.

Students’ body holds protest
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 1
The Haryana Students’ Association (HSA) today held a protest on Panjab University campus for seeking restoration of 85 per cent state-students’ quota in private and professional Institutions of Haryana state. The Haryanavi students would now get the benefits of their domicile in seven colleges only, which are either run by the government or with government-aid; as the Haryana Government had failed to pass legislation in the Assembly to fulfill the requirements of the Supreme Court’s order.

As per the directions of the Supreme Court of India, now 85 per cent of the seats would be filled on all India basis through All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) and the remaining 15 per cent of the seats have been kept under the discretion on the college management, subject to the condition that such seats should be utilised bonafide by the NRIs and their children/ wards, with the condition that merit should not be given a complete elapse.

Seeking immediate revocation of the decision, the HAS alleged that the government had sold interests of the Haryanavi students to the private professional Institutions. The students of Haryana would be deprived of admission in their own state’s professional institutions, as Haryana was the only state in the county where this quota had been abolished.

Keeping in view the interests of the Haryanavi students’ the HSA was planning to submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Haryana to adopt the “sons of soil” policy at levels in admissions and job opportunities, Mr Madaan added.
