Promoting city as medical tourism destination
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, August 6
Dr R. Kumar from Chandigarh attended the fourth conclave of the Indian Convention Promotion Bureau (ICPB) held in Delhi to promote India as a destination for international conferences in medical and pharmaceutical areas. By the end of the conference, which concluded two days ago, Dr Kumar elicited a positive response from top officials of the ICPB, who advised Chandigarh to enroll itself as partner in its parent body so that it could be promoted as a medical tourism destination.

The conference was attended by Union Minister of Tourism Ambika Soni, Secretary Tourism A.K. Misra and ICPB chairman Rajeev Talwar.

Speaking during an interactive session, Dr Kumar, who represented Chandigarh, emphasised the potential of health tourism and the prospects the city could offer in holding medical and other health-related conferences.

“The facilities at Chandigarh are world class,” he said, adding: “While the waiting list is long and appointments may take months in other countries, in India and in cities like Chandigarh the appointment is available on demand. Costs are just 10 per cent of those in western countries. Our approach is also personalised and need based, while the approach in the West is protocol based.”

Dr Kumar also presented some insights into the alternative systems of treatment and prevention available in India like naturopathy, yoga, Unani and others.

“We can earn a huge amount of foreign exchange if the potential of health tourism is fully tapped. In fact if health tourism is promoted, other tourism can piggyback, without any substantial addition to the overall expenditure. In the process, India will gain and patients from abroad will save a lot, besides the benefit of visiting Indian heritage sites,” said Dr Kumar.

In reply to Dr Kumar’s submission before the ICPB, it was said that the focus would be on organising international conventions.

Dr Kumar told Chandigarh Tribune: “For all clearances pertaining to conventions, the ICPB has decided to act as a single window for the convenience of foreign delegates.

The ICPB also advised Chandigarh to enroll on its parent body. Right now it is not in the list of cities being promoted by the ICPB.”
