PU refutes report on selection
Chandigarh, July 18 “Of the most essential 44 posts, which were to be filled for new courses started at Swami Sarvanand Giri Institute, Hoshiarpur, the Regional Centre at Ludhiana, the University Institute of Legal Studies and the Five Year Course of Economics at Chandigarh, 30 selections were made. The selection committees decided to re-advertise 14 posts where candidates were not found to be suitable,” stated the rejoinder. However, according to the papers put up before the PU Syndicate on July 12 for its meeting, the various selection committees of the university selected as many as 48 candidates. While 32 were asked to join, another 16 candidates were put on the waiting list. Out of these the selection of two candidates was rejected by the syndicate. Interestingly, while the university has shown remarkable alacrity to respond to a newspaper report at least two of the candidates who had given written complaints to the PU Vice-Chancellor against the selection of a particular candidate in the UIET were still awaiting a response from his office. Reiterating that there had been gross irregularities in the selections, one of these candidates, who is a pool scientist at the university, again pointed out today that her claim to the post was ignored while another candidate who was allegedly not as qualified as she was selected. “I gave a written complaint first to the Vice-Chancellor and then to the Syndicate members but I am yet to get a reply,” she added. Another candidate, who too had applied for a post at the UIET but was rejected, stated that the university did not follow any fixed criteria for selection to the post of lecturers. “Here selections are made solely on the basis of performance of the candidate during the interview which is against a Supreme Court judgement over the issue. At other places performance during the interview are just a part of the overall qualifications and suitability of the candidates,” he said. “The university should be made answerable for the arbitrariness with which these selections are made. The process followed by the screening committee should be fixed and the entire system should be transparent,” he said, adding that the system followed by Guru Nanak Dev University was both reasonable and transparent. Incidentally, the DPR in his note has failed to mention various selections made to the UIET, which are the ones that have elicited the complaints from the candidates. |
